My cats would object to dogs being portrayed as discriminatory. Similarly the mice wouldn’t want to see cats. All very racist.
😁
Dogs and cats aren’t amongst the choices, neither are mice.
Possibly for that very reason ….

Figures such as Jane Austen and Winston Churchill are to be axed from our banknotes as they are apparently elitist and divisive and not fitting with our natural and cultural diversity.
It is decisions this that push people towards Reform and Restore.
When is all this nonsense going to stop?

I get annoyed with those who want to conveniently airbrush some of our history. If they want to modernise the look of banknotes then say so but don't use the excuse they were 'elitist and divisive'. Jane Austen and Churchill were of their time.
I shudder to think who the woke brigade would like to see on our currency. Britain has a wealth of wonderful wildlife, so I am more than happy to go with that.
Exactly who has stated that they are divisive and elitist?
I’ve not seen any links to a report stating this? Sorry if I’ve missed it.
I don't think anyone is erasing our history. They are just having a change. There might be some artists who will gain from commissions and I look forward to their wildlife depictions.
Who has said that our banknotes are elitist and divisive?

How is putting wildlife on banknotes airbrushing people out of history?
Serious question. I genuinely don't follow the logic at all.How many times have we heard about statues, book, etc being removed or discarded because they depict a part of our history that doesn't sit well with some?
The OP's thread says Austen and Churchill no longer fit our natural and cultural diversity so someone, no idea who, has decided they have to go. To me that is airbrushing our history, which I don't like. History has happened, we can't change it.
Something else has to appear on banknotes now which will be our wildlife, which suits me fine.
We hear of those things, but they aren't always true. Churchill has not been 'axed' or 'discarded' personally - it is just a change of image on banknotes.
Airbrushing is usually to make people look better, not to edit them out of a photo, and arguably that has happened with some figures in the past. Churchill was a good leader in the war, but Jarrow marchers and Welsh miners had a different view of him, for instance, and those views are not necessarily known to all. We've just had the centenary of the General Strike, and there will be people alive whose grandparents were starved into submission because of Churchill's actions. To them, he is unlikely to be a hero - the scars of that sort of thing last for generations. We can't change history, but we can recognise it for what it was, and respect those on both sides of conflicts.
IMO it's fine to have his face on notes for a while to recognise the good things he did, but then replace him with, say, Aneurin Bevan or Shirley Williams after a few years to recognise their contributions too. Or a stoat or a ladybird, for that matter. People may take issue with any of those images, but they would know they would also only be there for a limited time.
When statues have been removed it has usually been because of connections to slavery, I think. Whilst some who profited from the sale of humans may have been responsible for good deeds too, I can understand why those whose families were enslaved would object to seeing statues celebrating the architects of the slave trade, as would others who object to it whether they were 'involved' or not. The figures don't have to be written out of history, but nor should they be seen as heroes. They should be seen 'in the round' rather than having the bad bits airbrushed, IYSWIM. That's how I see it, anyway.
The Bank of England said this:
"Staying Ahead of Counterfeiters: The primary driver for issuing a new series is security. Updating the physical notes allows the Bank to introduce the most modern, intricate security features—such as holographic windows and complex print patterns—making them much harder to forge".
.
As good a reason as any😀. No mention of erasure, then?
I have voted but I thought the images were fairly boring to be honest.

From everything I have read I think there was an element of moving away from historic figures, but it has been taken out of context and exaggerated by certain elements of the media.
As I described upthread the decision to choose wildlife was taken after a vote, with 60% of voters in favour, so I think it is incorrect to say that it came as the initial advice.
So, the citizens were given the chance to decide?
Can't see a problem there.

Well I don't know how they chose the very limited choices for each of the 3 categories, but there are in my opinion some glaring omissions. Why no robin, sparrow, ladybird, red squirrel, red deer, roe deer, shetland pony, shire horse, blue tit, red admiral butterfly to name but a few native and iconic wildlife to our shores?
I agree with what you say. There are many more suitable creatures than a basking shark and a salmon! Some very strange choices there. Even the dolphin would be a bit strange on a bank note.
We have so many wonderful birds, so the Curlew is a bit random. The prettiest and cutest must be the Robin and Blue Tit, but neither are there. I'm happy to see the beautiful Barn Owl on the list.
The greatest mistake is to leave out the Red Squirrel which has really upset me. It would have won, no doubt about it.
I absolutely adore shire horses but they're not wildlife so can't really count.
Google says who compiled the list!
The 18-animal shortlist for the new UK banknotes was compiled by a panel of independent wildlife experts chosen by the Bank of England. The panel members included:
Katy Bell – Ulster Wildlife
Gordon Buchanan – Wildlife filmmaker and broadcaster
Miranda Krestovnikoff – Wildlife presenter
Prof. Steve Ormerod – Professor of Ecology at Cardiff UniversityNadeem Perera – Wildlife presenter and conservationist
Prof. Dawn Scott – Professor of Biology at Nottingham Trent University
This panel selected the creatures from a wide pool of native, wild species.

I haven't a clue, either. The OP, Sago doesn't say.

Who has said that our banknotes are elitist and divisive?
The Bank of England commissioned research from Savanta in October 2025. The search revealed that depicting historical figures on bank notes was viewed by the majority of the research participants as elitist and divisive They generally found, particularly the younger ones that historical figures presented a backward-looking vision of the UK and was too disconnected from their own experiences and carried a risk of division.
As a result of this the Bank held a public consultation, and "Nature" received the highest support with 60% naming it as their preferred theme.
Chestnut 16.03 helpfully sets out panel members who chose the 18 animal short list.
The Bank took care to effect the change to reflect public majority views and preferences.
Not Chestnut sorry, she commented on Rosie51's list 16.00.
It was Chestnut at 16.03- Im having a weird moment 🥱
Bring it on I say, glad I won’t be seeing that old warmonger’s face on my readies anymore. Celebrating our wildlife is a lovely idea.
Who uses cash anymore?
I have no idea what design is on bank notes or coins or postage stamps. I’ve never noticed or cared.
Churchill is as irrelevant as Wellington in 2026 and more people would recognise Jilly Cooper than Jane Austen.
I know who'd look good in a banknote Allira of course. She might as well be there as she's not allowed here.
Aveline
Where's Allira?
I don’t think you’ll get her on a banknoteAveline but you could give it a try!

Hmm, I think we might agree to differ on who kicked off WWII, the atrocities of that regime and who was key among the Allied Heads of State and Commanders I saving us all from the horrors of a Nazi regime.
Just my opinion of course 🇬🇧
Ironic that you should express your unusual (?) political views on the anniversary of DDay

To be honest, it's so long since I had an actual banknote, I haven't a clue what's on any of them.
