I’m saddened to see Streeting resign and now he’ll start the protracted process of attempting to usurp the PM and take his place.

I’m sad because this is the first time this has happened to a Labour PM whilst still serving in power, sad because this will cause yet more chaos and economic and financial instability and sad because I’m actually pretty sick of all politicians at this moment!

Knee jerk response to the wins by Reform, handing even more success to Farage who will be lapping up this circus.
Totally counter productive.

Absolutely! Though Farage doesn’t need to be too smug, his newly elected councillors appear to be diminishing every day!

The psycho drama continues and it’s very… boring. Wes Streeting writes that Starmer has no vision for this country… but he has! It’s basically fairly communist in its aspirations. Starmer needs to improve his communication skills pretty quickly.

The PR team for Labour are rubbish ronib.

All media, of any description, will be full of it Ad Nauseam.

Well, Mr Trump has got bored with his silly illegal war so he's off the front pages for the time being.

Bloody fools.

I’ve lost patience with them.

Streeting had better have a slate that is whiter than white because if he hasn’t the right wing press will have him for breakfast. Likewise all the potential PMs.

Bloody fools.

Couldn't have said it better!

You never fail to bring a note of hilarity to my day.

Thank you😄

As for the feeding frenzy currently enjoyed by print and broadcast media, I want nothing to do with it.
I switched from The World at One to J S Bach's triple concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord on Radio 3. What a relief.
Like others on here, I hope Keir Starmer toughs it out.

There is obviously nothing going on in the world so the Government has decided it has to make some just to fill the headlines.

Last time this happened was nearly 100 years ago and the BBC played music.
Could we have music instead, please? 🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶

X posts but so apt, Romola! 😁

Of Labours communications and public relations teams had been better we wouldn’t be where we are now.

Which is up the creek without the proverbial paddle.

I am getting increasingly concerned that these idiots are tantamount to handing the keys of No.10 to either Farage or Polanski.

In either case we as a country are completely screwed!!!!

Marginal seat, Mandelsons protege funded by private health companies. I think he’s got carried away by his good communication skills ( he’s going to need them….)

I suppose right-wing Streeting’s plan was - having seen all the declarations that Starmer is dead in the water - to mount a coup before left-wing Andy Burnham could join the fray.

With luck it will all fizzle out but even so there will be the loss of a competent Secretary of State for health.

I despair of them all. This country is going to the dogs whilst they snipe and bicker at one another. Can they just get on with the job they were elected to do? Best leave Starmer where he is and see if he can turn things around. Clutching at straws here.

I agree to leave KS in position

The advisers too have a lot to answer for.

Yes Ronib, I agree, and that wasn't made apparent before he was elected.
Thinking about the local election results I don't recall any election like it , when the electorate spoke so clearly, and it is Starmer whom they blame. He says I take full responsibility, then lays the blame elsewhere and someone gets sacked, one of the reasons he is not trusted.
It simply is not good enough to say he is the best of a bad bunch. The Labour party has been plunged into chaos by his poor leadership and apparent lack of direction and it needs wiser heads than his to sort this out.
I would suggest Yvette Cooper with a coalition of the more sensible and experienced, (there must be some) until due process is observed and a proper leader chosen, not Mr. Burnham who is showing his true colours.

ronib Thu 14-May-26 16:20:39

There seems to be a huge chasm between government and the people. A bit odd since it’s government by the grown ups…. Actually my 5 year old grandson questions more than this offering.

Smileless2012 Thu 14-May-26 16:29:02

Well IMO if there's going to be a change Streeting is the best candidate.

His resignation was clear and concise and saying what appears to be felt by many of the Labour party and their voters. As things stand, I think Starmer remaining as PM is more likely to heaven forbid, give the keys of no. 10 to Farage.

If Starmer's as passionate about his party and country as he claims, he should set a date for his departure making the transition for his replacement, as smooth as possible.

Flippin2 Thu 14-May-26 16:32:05

I didn't vote for Starmer but the situation is ridiculous, can't we have a PM complete a full term..I like Andy Burnham but is he PM material? Angela Rayner, not at all and Wes Streeting reminds me of an ex boss of mine, little bit too full of himself

Sarnia Thu 14-May-26 16:34:21

Chris Mason, the BBC's Political Editor says the word is that Wes Streeting was way off the number of MP's he would need to support him in triggering a leadership challenge. Good. I hope they draw a line under all this now and get on with tackling the many problems facing our country today.

ferry23 Thu 14-May-26 16:39:15

I think we should form the Gransnet Party - we'd have the country ship shape and in Bristol fashion before you could say Boris Johnson wink

Or could he just be biding his time? If the number of his votes moves to say AR to trigger the process, can Wes S not then step back into the running?

JenniferEccles Thu 14-May-26 16:42:57

I think Kemi Badenoch summed the situation up perfectly yesterday when called on Streeting to “just do your job”

If most of us can see the folly in calling a leadership campaign now, why can’t those in government, the so called experts?

Smileless2012 Thu 14-May-26 16:43:42

hmm Is it likely Sarnia that he'd have resigned if he wasn't going to trigger a leadership challenge and would he do so, if he was ^way off the number of MP's he would need to support him^; somehow I don't think so.

westendgirl Thu 14-May-26 16:46:27

I heard someone being interviewed about the present situation . His comment was that they should all grow up. Mine too
I am sick to to death of the lack of loyalty, the inability to pull together and the sky is falling attitude.~That includes Streeting, Burnham, Rayner and all the media hacks frothing at the mouth at the thought of a story.GROW UP the lot of you.
I actually have wondered who is behind this stirring, this attempt to produce devisiveness, because , believe me there is someone somewhere who is orchestrating the whole thing, aided and abetted by s.m.

Oreo Thu 14-May-26 16:49:33

I have to say I was impressed with Streeting’s statement that was read out on R4 a little while ago. Concise, articulate, to the point, no waffle.

Do you mean his resignation letter? I thought it was very good.
Not sure that he would be chosen as Starmer’s successor but good luck to him.
