And now Iran is saying no thanks to the deal.

Nobody is condoning Iran holding up vessels in the strait. This is their reponse to US and Israeli starting the war. It's having an effect and Trump will need to start negotiating.

As Maremia states- all Iran has to do is survive whilst Trump huffs and puffs and goes round in circles- until the penny drops.

Exactly. Iran is stronger and more prosperous because of this.

Ships and countries that have nothing to do with the war are being held up, Iran is totally in the wrong here.

The US and Israel are in the wrong for starting this illegal war without an exit plan. This war has caused worldwide chaos and effects economies.

After whipping Maduro out of Venezuela, Trump thought he could do the same with Iran, a quick in and Victory! No doubt pushed by Netanyahu, his buddy Bibi! No one analysed the issues, or if they did that idiot Hegseth, who always looks and sounds as if he thinks he’s in a war movie, no doubt dismissed the intelligence.
Both Trump and Hegseth think they are in a black and white propaganda film!
Now both finding out the consequences of firing the intelligent people who were in the Pentagon, until Hegseth thought they were threatening his job by telling him things like it won’t work, and that the Strait of Hormuz is a weak point that the Irans might capitalise on!

Trump is supposed to be visiting China soon.
Should be interesting.
Might force him to 'end' his illegal war.

I’m not entirely sure how you can feel this way Oreo, Trump/Netanyahu caused this.

I do not condone the Iranian Regime, quite the opposite I condemn them, but Trump with his illegal warmongering has left those poor Iranian citizen with a leader, who by all accounts, is far worse than his father, more hardline and now angry.

Oh, well done Trump, yet more lives you’ve made harder! He’s the gift which keeps giving 🤬

China is saying what everyone knows aren't they AGA.

He'll never admit it but for this to end Trump is going to have to give in to a great deal if not all of Iran's 'wish list'.

Good! Serves Trump right!

The fourteen point peace plan from the US has been said to be a wish list by Iran.
China are keen to get the Strait open and have called the US irresponsible and dangerous by blocking it further.

Unfortunately, 'possession is nine tenths of the Law'.

Wyllow3 Wed 06-May-26 19:59:56

Or the US will have to cut a deal with them?

Oreo Wed 06-May-26 19:55:52

They will have to cut a deal with the US at some point.

AGAA4 Wed 06-May-26 19:50:52

International law does state that shipping is free to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman do own it however.
As international law has been breached by the Trump regime it becomes more difficult to enforce it and Iran are unlikely to give up the hold they have on it.

Oreo Wed 06-May-26 19:34:05

Oman doesn’t claim any rights over it.

Oreo Wed 06-May-26 19:33:06

Iran have never argued against it.
Under International Maritime Laws it’s for all to pass through.

LemonJam Wed 06-May-26 19:32:14

So Iran can still lay claim to Sovereignty.

I guess the reality is it is argued that the US and Israel initial strike was not legal. Now they are having arguments about the legality of Iran controlling the strait.

LemonJam Wed 06-May-26 19:30:27

The UN Convention of the Law of the Sea ( UNCLOS) was adopted in 1982 apparently. UNCLOS created a special legal regime for straits like Hormuz to be known as "transit passages"

So there is an architecture to enable smooth transit but the politics is more complicated. Oman ratified UNCLOS but Iran didnt. The US hasn't ratified it either.

Oreo Wed 06-May-26 19:27:43

It’s just as Petra says, the Strait doesn’t belong to Iran.

LemonJam Wed 06-May-26 19:27:09

Just googled: because the Strait of Hormuz is less than 24 miles wide it falls entirely within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.

LemonJam Wed 06-May-26 19:24:55

petra

Sarnia
Iran doesn’t own the strait. It only has legal control over its own territorial waters which applies to all countries with a coastline.

Don't countries have sovereign rights over coastal waters under international law? E.g a 12 nautical mile zone from their land border where they have full sovereignty and a 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone for resources. Would be sufficient that cover/control the strait at current levels?

You only have to recall France and UK fighting over such rights for fishing during the Brexit negotiations.

Glad you said that, I was about to. The Strait of Hormuz is for any ship or boat to pass through.

An Iranian Ambassador is heading to China. Next week, Trump will also be there.
All this winning must be exhausting for him.

Yes being the victor, the best at everything and the most important person in history must take its toll on an eighty year old.
