Another appalling attack

My heart goes out to the Jewish community in Golders Green.

I utterly condemn these attacks and wish the stabbing victims a full and speedy recovery.

TerriBull Thu 30-Apr-26 08:48:50

Has it ever been suggested, that any other demographic should move away from their establised communities?? I can't help thinking this is just another subliminal dig, "your Jewish, expect these attacks, therefore the onus for your safety should be with yourselves" hmm Not much better than Zac Polanski's "is it just the perception of the Jewish community that they experience more attacks than any one else, rather than the actual reality" something along those lines. Yeah right!you've nailed it Zac sad Yet another with a skewed vision of how matters really are. Head and sand spring to mind.

rosie1959 Thu 30-Apr-26 08:48:45

Well said Ferry23 the police did an excellent job. To those who criticise them how exactly would they have got the knife off this attacker? Ask him nicely?

Galaxy Thu 30-Apr-26 08:47:30

It is odd when these mental health episodes target Jews rather than I don't know Hindus or catholics, it seems to be a very specific type of 'mental health'.

Franbern Thu 30-Apr-26 08:43:24

This seems to have been an attack by someone with long standing mental health issues.
So, suddenly the magic money tree produces more money for the police.
Perhaps if Mental Health had not been so cash strapped, with workers in it leaving or even having breakdowns as they are so overworked,. Staffing has been cut, whilst workloads substantially increased.
The best security against this sort of attack (against anybody), would be a very substantial and on-going increase in NHS mental health funding.

Where is Jewish hatred on this thread please?

AGAA4 Exactly! This thread shows Jewish hatred is alive and kicking. These people know exactly who they are. Sickening!

Threads about injustices and attacks on Jews always bring out the "hiding in plain sight" posters.

Those that have the answers to a problem that has existed since time immemorial. And like to tell the rest of us hmm

Self righteous pearl clutching preachers who fail to, or simply refuse to, read the room.

I often know who has written a particular post without looking at their name.

(The lovely Israeli GNetter who eventually felt hounded off the site.)

I wonder if they realise how obvious they make themselves?

petra Thu 30-Apr-26 08:36:17

Moving to a less Jewish area is a non starter.
As a Jew you would loose your whole support system. You would no longer be able to live your life as a practicing Jew.
No kosher shops, no schools, no synagogue, not wearing the clothes that you would normally wear.
No hairdressers to care for the women’s wigs.
It’s a whole life way of living.

Sarnia Thu 30-Apr-26 08:17:21

On the BBC News last night they said the perpetrator was well known as having serious violent and mental health issues. Here we go again. Why then is he at liberty to walk the streets? We are too slow to learn and too slow to act.

Galaxy Thu 30-Apr-26 07:57:18

I have often in the past criticised the behaviour of the Met police.
I am very sad it is necessary but I was in awe at their response, considerable bravery.

AGAA4 Thu 30-Apr-26 07:57:05

ferry thanks for posting that. While the keyboard warriors would be running away the police have to run towards and tackle a crazed man with a knife who would have gone on with his murderous rampage.
Well done to those policeman putting their own lives at risk to save others.

The government is now giving another 25 million for the safety of the Jewish community. There will be more police allocated.
The problem is they can't be everywhere at all times. That is just not possible. This attacker has serious mental health issues and was out on the streets which is another issue that is difficult to solve.
Extra security for the Jewish community is good but it doesn't solve the problem of unreasonable hatred so attacks will go on.

love0c Thu 30-Apr-26 07:41:50

ferry23 Well posted!

Attacking one person for the wrongs committed by another just because they share an ethnicity or religion is unjustifiable no matter how you spin it. I am fed up with the 'of course it's wrong but..........xyz........you can see why they're angered and you have to understand'. Strange how it only ever seems to apply to attacks on Jews, we never seem to see these arguments when the attacks are on other groups. No they're condemned without a single 'but'.

Thanks for this Rosie51
Nothing excuses attacks against Jews because of what’s happening elsewhere in the world.
There simply aren’t any ‘but’ moments.

Today in Golders Green, north London, Met 999 response team officers, who were unarmed, responded to a man armed with a knife who had just stabbed two people in a terrorist attack near a synagogue.
They deployed a Taser. He kept going. So they put him on the floor the old-fashioned way and took the knife off him. Suspect arrested, public safe, officers fine.
And naturally, before the bodycam footage had even finished buffering, the professional bystanders were already typing.
These are the people whose closest experience of disarming a knife-wielding terrorist is watching it happen on their laptop screen, usually while sitting in their dressing gown with a cup of tea. Real tactical experts, these ones. Invaluable insight from people who have never once been required to make a life-or-death decision under pressure, in the street, with a knife coming at them, and whose only contribution to public safety is a strongly-worded tweet.
Officers Tased him. He did not stop. There are two people in hospital right now because this man was willing to stab strangers on a Wednesday morning in the name of terrorism. The officers did not have the luxury of a second opinion, a working group, or a comment section. They had a knife in their faces and about half a second to react.
They did their jobs. Brilliantly. Against a man who had already proven he would not stop.
So to every keyboard warrior currently explaining what the officers should have done differently: your expertise is not required. Your outrage is not valid. And frankly, your silence would have been far more useful.
Massive credit to every officer on scene this morning. Proper job. The officers who responded are a credit to the uniform and a credit to the nation.

Thinking about it, because it has been mentioned here, I don't understand the comment about how moving out of GG as a Jew would dilute the concentration of the Jewish faith.

Golders Green is already a very multicultural area as are most suburbs in London, so I don't buy the idea that the residents would have a better understanding of each other if there were more diversity of faiths and fewer Jews. Londoners of all religions, (GG residents are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and nothing at all), understand each other very well, in terms of living side by side, so for me, as a Londoner, I don't see moving away as being necessary or helpful.

And why move away from what actually has been a pretty safe, pleasant area with everything you want on the doorstep?

The bottom line is, Jewish people should feel safe in Golders Green or anywhere else. They don't anymore. You can take them out of the area, but you can't take antisemitism out of the next place they go to.
It follows Jewish people everywhere, and it's wrong.

nanna8 Thu 30-Apr-26 00:42:05

It is the same here in Australia. All those marches didn’t help, either. Some are too thick to realise marching against violence in another country does not equate to turning on people who are not associated with that war in any way.

Wyllow3 Thu 30-Apr-26 00:38:33

Wyllow3

Of course not. Who does but if we fail to understand all the factors possibly involved, we cannot address the problem fully.

Note - I was replying to Galaxy, not Annie.

Maybe that's why you asked me Annie, "Wyllow what caused pogroms in Russia, What caused the Holocaust? You have understanding of these "

You know I do, we've been discussing this now for over 3 years. I've repeated several times about my families involvement settling Jewish refugees after WW2, my Dad joining in Cable Street, my political education as to the details of the Holocaust.

If I criticise now it is for a regime.

fancyflowers Thu 30-Apr-26 00:25:46

Some of the current Jewish population will have ancestors who came to the UK to escape the Russian pogroms. Now look what is happening. Utterly and totally disgraceful. Wishing the victims a speedy recovery.

Why should Jews in London not. Feel safe ?

Everyone in London should feel safe.
Just awful.

Glad they caught him,but having seen the video of the arrest,it is utterly disgraceful. Two policeman repeatedly kicking the suspect in the head!…….this is when he was on the ground having already been tasered!Lucky he is still alive, they were really kicking him hard.Glad it is on video though.

Oh FFS, read the bloody room!
This monster has just stabbed two innocent people.
You behave like that, you give up your “human rights”.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 29-Apr-26 22:55:51

Oh I do know that! But the point being that they don’t feel safe and secure in their community.

No of course you shouldn’t have to, but in the absence of this feeling of safety etc, what I’m suggesting is - oh it doesn’t matter.

It all amounts to the same thing. No one, whatever their race or religion should be in fear for their lives, living peaceful lives within their own community. But then this is happening to communities all over the world isn’t it? Many families choose to stay and resist the hatred, others choose to up sticks and try to find somewhere, where they can bring up their children in safety and security.

I guess it amounts to personal choice in the end.

Anniebach Wed 29-Apr-26 22:46:52

I so agree Rosie why try to understand, it’s wrong

Whitewavemark2 Wed 29-Apr-26 22:45:42

GrannyGravy13

Whitewavemark2 yes, my Jewish friends are wealthy, they are in a position that they could relocate anywhere in the world (as could their children)

My point is ^why should they have to?^

That is my point as well. But meanwhile.
