I watched it all, there is a summary on the page above.

He did quite a bit of challenging, more than expected.

Most significant:

Praised an Independent Judiciary. And the whole house applauded on their feet, not just the democrats. Mentioned the need for checks and balances on power

Raised climate change pretty strongly

Nato needed co-operation inc Europe not nations standing alone - he reminded the US on cooperation after 9/11.

Total need to support Ukraine (hint, hint)

Not to be inward looking.

This was one very very clever and well researched and written speech. Clear, articulate, and clever - It went down very well and he is clearly respected, it will be interesting to see what the US press make of it.

Yes, FriedGreenTomatoes2, this made me laugh as well.

This gave me a chuckle this morning!

It is very unlikely that KC will have said any such thing.

I doubt that very much.
In fact, I'm positive he didn't say that. As for other things Trump claims that Charles said to him privately, Trump will twist those to suit his own agenda, if he in fact listened properly and understood any of the conversation.

We are not in the North Atlantic.

🤔

We were last time I looked at a map.

Of course Charles did not write the speech - but it was a good speech covering many things the government wanted said.
However, it is scary how Trump needs his ego massaging by people he thinks important. The man is so unstable he could cause WW3
and appears to be trying to.

He would have had a lot of input into the speech even if he did not write it word for word.
That was obvious.

AGAA4, I was about to post this but you beat me to it. I wouldn't believe a word he says. I'm sure King Charles will have a diplomatic response to him or ignore it as the posturing of a stupid old man. Of course, Trump is getting at Starmer and attempting to create division. He has no understanding of how these things work here at all.

AGAA4 Thu 30-Apr-26 08:04:59

Disgusted that Trump has said King Charles would have followed him into the Iran war.
It is against all protocol to repeat any private conversations but of course this is Trump and he's adept at twisting words to suit his own agenda.

I listened to his speech an heaard about defence spending and F35s We. Don't need to spend more on defence.

The book The Monstrous Anger of the Guns.

We are seeing injustices caused by war and occupation unfold in real-time via social media, and we are speaking out in our millions against these horrors. Yet, from Gaza to Ukraine, the bombs continue to fall. We must understand why this is happening if we are to end it.

Monstrous Anger of the Guns lays bare the dark and deceitful world of the global arms trade, which, often funded in our name, is a business that counts its profits in billions and its losses in human lives. Leading activists and campaigners connect the dots, showing how notions of citizenship, democracy and trust in governments are misguided, and how we can fight back by building mass movements, using direct action and legal justice to end the flow of weapons and the environmental and human devastation they bring.

On the subject of the royals Gordon Brown hs written a piece in the Statesman about Andrew there should be no cover ups and about the huge amount he spent while trade envoy.

SophiaxScot Thu 30-Apr-26 07:24:29

I'm no royalist far from it in fact but I thought Charles speech was outstanding, In especially loved the humour laced through it,so subtle at times Trump will wake up one morning and think wait a minute that was a joke at my expense

Calendargirl Thu 30-Apr-26 06:49:15

If the President was so ‘in awe’, then he would probably not have called him ‘Charles’, but would have said ‘King Charles’.

Whatever, Donald sees himself as Charles’ BFF now.

I’m not a monarchist remotely but well done Charles and his speechwriters. I wonder if Trump understood the message though. Trump subsequently has posted a photo of them together with the caption “two kings” ( yuk).

Oh, for goodness' sake.
He is delusional.

Buckingham Palace also had to issue a clarification of what Trump claimed King Charles said about stopping Iran having nuclear weapons.
We know he will not have said exactly that.

& we all know Trump isn't the world's best listener - & wouldn't deign to take notes to compensate for this shortcoming, or read them back if anyone else did so for him.

Luckygirl3 Wed 29-Apr-26 18:58:45

Maybe Melania was enjoying someone who did not kowtow to her OH for a change even if the Orange One probably missed what was really being said.

grannybuy Wed 29-Apr-26 18:16:56

The king really was impressive. It struck me that Melania seemed to be enjoying the occasions, and was smiling more than usual.

Sleepyhead52 Wed 29-Apr-26 17:15:20

I watched a bit of GB News (I watch other news channels as well, for balance!) and I just wished the commentatos would stop saying that the president was so "in awe" of the king. That almost demeans the president; he was respectful, courteous and 'careful' around the king but "in awe"? Not really ... and I am not a particular supporter of Mr Trump.

*Trump subsequently has posted a photo of them together with the caption “two kings” ( yuk).* ..... seriously?!

Yes but one of them isn't bombing the hell out of innocent civilians with no end in sight.

There is no end to his arrogance.

yes he has excellent speech writers,

They know him well. It was pure magic.

An outstanding example of how the soft diplomacy of our Royal Family makes it so valuable. The naysayers with their old chestnuts of "parasites", "scroungers" etc fail to see the less than obvious through their one dimensional spectacles or just simply don't really understand how powerful the Royals can be on the international stage. They are the original "influencers".

Hear hear. Although obviously there are SOME members of the larger Royal Family who don’t deserve the accolades that Charles is currently and deservedly receiving. Well done that lad!

l wonder if Trump understood the message

I doubt Trump has read or listened to the speech and none of his lackeys are likely to discuss nuances with him.

Btw, the Oh, for goodness' sake was meant for Trump, not vegansrock!

There several words in the speech which were of more than one syllable; even if he read it I doubt that he would understand much of it or the subtleties in it.

Oreo Wed 29-Apr-26 15:29:25

Grandma2002

Whoever wrote or prepared the speech the king delivered it gracefully and personally and in a very dignified manner. I for one was very proud of him.

Same here 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
