Well, well, well.

What role did David Lammy have as foreign secretary, in Mandelson’s appointment?

Allsorts Fri 17-Apr-26 07:50:32

I wish I liked Badenoch, agree with what she said though.

MartavTaurus Fri 17-Apr-26 07:44:30

Even if it was the system of choosing Mandelson that was at fault, and it was Olly Robbins who made the mistake, surely the appointment was such a monumental decision at this precarious time that KS would have at least given it ten minutes of his valuable time?

Luckygirl3 Fri 17-Apr-26 07:41:56

I most certainly can see Kemi Badenoch on the world stage.

This has to be a joke ....

Luckygirl3 Fri 17-Apr-26 07:40:57

Either KS lied about Mandelsohn passing the vetting process which makes no sense at all ... what was to be gained?
Or he was not informed of the facts in which case he could have done nothing as he knew nothing. PMs rely on information from their staff who should be relied on to do their jobs. They cannot pin colleagues down and ask them whether they are lying over every one of the myriad decisions to be taken. There had to be an element of trust which in this case was broken and I can understand him being furious.
This is a critical time for us and for the world. No time to lose a statesman who has represented our interests impeccably in this global mess; and no time for the opposition to be playing political games.

If Starmer, a lawyer didn't know no wonder he's so unpopular. Mandelson couldn't be more obvious unless it was tattooed on his face.

eazybee Fri 17-Apr-26 07:35:10

I most certainly can see Kemi Badenoch on the world stage.
Starmer has achieved very little after sweeping into power with a majority that would allow him to push through what he wished; the Press report and comment on his actions.

His insistence on appointing Mandelson for one of the most important Ambassadorial roles in the world, liaising with a volatile President at a time of increasing danger, show how dangerously incompetent Starmer is.
Plus the blaming, and sacking, of his staff for his own omissions reveal the true nature of the man.

ronib Fri 17-Apr-26 07:19:23

Sir Olly Robbins has been sacked by Starmer.
We shall never know the truth.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 17-Apr-26 07:06:11

The right wing press have had it in for Starmer from day one. It’s sad that people have such short memories of the 14 years of Tory misrule. It wasn’t just Johnson who was appallingly bad, don’t forget Truss, who still thinks she did no wrong. In these treacherous times for the world, Starmer is the only choice really to handle the shenanigans created by trump. Can you see Badenoch, or words fail me, Farage on the world stage?

nanna8 Fri 17-Apr-26 07:02:34

He’s a lawyer. Of course he pays attention to detail. The problem is his attention to truth.

eazybee Fri 17-Apr-26 07:00:26

The Prime Minister claims he did not know about the vetting of Mandelson. He did not ask?

Lack of attention to detail to detail has brought down far more competent politicians than Starmer.
A moderately clever man regarding everyone else as a fool is another path to disaster.

Johnson became PM despite attending a private party in Italy (when foreign minister) without his security men and held by a former head of KGB . He was photographed obviously the worse for wear the following morning. It's never been reported what he was doing there. It was clearly a massive breech of security.

Boris was kicked out for attending a small birthday gathering (which he did not plan) during covid. Starmer has been mired in scandal from his earliest days, but remains in office.
How?

Johnson did not resign because of Partygate or a birthday cake but because of a series of events culminating in him appointing somebody with a history of sexual misconduct Johnson claimed he didn’t know about despite joking about it. His colleagues were so fed up with his constant mess ups several of them resigned and Johnson had no alternative but to resign. The five issues that led to his forced resignation are summarized below.

He’ll cling on - the nature of the man. Any other PM would have resigned a long time ago.

REKA Fri 17-Apr-26 00:41:52

Starmer didn't know? Surely nobody believes that.

I don't think it was to placate Trump, rather that wily Mandelson would have the measure of Trump and be able to deal with his erratic behaviour.

Unfortunately, it was not to be.

Yes, that was obviously the plan.

FWIW, I think there is some doubt on whether Starmer knew: listened to the midnight news on R4.

Elegran Fri 17-Apr-26 00:12:26

BBC has update on this a few minutes ago.

Mandelson wasn't known as the Prince of Darkness for nothing; it was a well earned title right back in the 1990s.

We have been here before with Evgeny Lebedev’s peerage.

Galaxy Thu 16-Apr-26 23:05:34

Why are some peopke so keen for this to happen? Because my morality doesn't include supporting the appointment of a man who gave government information to a paedophile. I understand people have different morality but it just isn't mine. I was absolutely against the appointment of mandelson and said it would end in disaster. For what it is worth I think it will bring about the end for Starner.

Silvergirl Thu 16-Apr-26 22:52:58

They were so sure at that time that Mandelson would be the perfect Trump whisperer, no one was thinking straight. At the time all the leaders were trying to do anything to placate Trump. It was always going to end on tears!
