When is a royal tour, not a royal tour?

Silly me! It's when you visit a children's hospital and wave at the crowds. As well as visiting a homeless refuge and a War Memorial. Not forgetting attending an Invictus event and the last post ceremony on Anzac Day.
Plus the inevitable money making events which are now allowed.
Harry and Meghan's visit to Australia, (in very high shoes and expensive outfits).
Forgive my confusion. Am I missing the point? 😆

You forgot, in your diatribe, to mention mummy's promiscuous behaviour leading to doubts about Harry's parentage.

He’s the image of Prince Charles.

Oh we haven't had a Meghan bitchfest for ages…. Lets all pile on…..

Hear, hear.

^Perhaps because he keeps humming that Randy Crawford song.
Stop, just stop, Harry^

Oh No! That’s one of my favourite songs.
I’m going off it already! 😂😂

Harry is always referred to as that little boy walking behind his mother’s coffin. Now correct me if I’m wrong but I remember TWO young boys walking behind their mother’s coffin, not one.

Yes and William was only two years older, yet seems not to attract the same sympathy or amount of slack offered.

Harry has been cut a lot of slack over the years based on this. His real issue is his hatred and jealousy of his brother who will one day be king, and also the amount of drugs he has confessed to taking over the years which influences his behaviour. The palace covered up a lot for him, some of which we now know, some yet to be revealed no doubt. I look forward to the Sentebale court case revealing yet more about this man who likes his own way and kicks off if he doesn’t get it. In some ways, not many, I pity Meghan Markle for what she has taken on. I very much doubt it is a love match for either.

I'm perplexed as to why, after almost 7 years and numerous overseas trips, Megan still grips onto Harry as though he's about to fly away.

Perhaps because he keeps humming that Randy Crawford song.
Stop, just stop, Harry!

Anniebach Wed 15-Apr-26 11:38:27

The royals charge for their presence?

Allira Wed 15-Apr-26 11:36:39

I must remember to use both those words in my daily vocabulary.

Performative has only appeared recently on Gransnet, however, and was remarked upon at the time.
It used to be known as showing off!

Maybe she thinks given the chance, he will Cardamom.

"performative is this the latest buzz word on GN?"

No it's common in many people's vocabulary Allira.

Buzz word - definitely
Like "existential" - makes you look clever!🤓

Funny- I thought it was just asking a question and suggesting an opinion?🤪🤪🤪

Yes, it is at 4.30pm in Canberra but not at dawn. Did they visit Canberra? I am not really following their progress.
I'm not sure where they are on the tour. I'm reading about them perfunctorily, (not performatively), from a foreign country where I'm waiting to order my lunch! 🥞

I don’t think Harry is doing Archie any favours by publicly declaring that he felt a disconnection between them while Meghan was pregnant, struggled with fatherhood and needed to ‘cleanse’ himself of his past.

Poor kid, having such a self obsessed father and a mother who encourages it.

I seem to remember that pre Meghan, Harry made no secret of the fact that he couldn’t wait to have children of his own. 🤔

I remember Harry saying that, especially after William became a Dad. I also remember Harry as a Jack-the-Lad character, often kicking over the traces but always with a smile on his face. As a nation we indulged him and forgave his errors (Nazi uniform) because so many of us thought of that woebegone little boy following his Mum's coffin. We had a soft spot for him. Now, he cuts a rather forlorn figure. I wonder if he is truly happy with his life.

I thought a quick visit to Canberra was mentioned on the News, to be happening at the end of the tour.

My DD lives there, she went to the War Memorial and saw the King and Queen when they visited.

Somehow, I don’t think she’ll be bothering to go see H&M.

DD visits Canberra sometimes with her work.
Must ask her if she was invited!

The OP feels like a classic case of framing shaping perception.

What’s being described here; hospital visits, meeting vulnerable communities, attending memorial ceremonies, supporting veteran initiatives like the Invictus Games, is exactly what royal tours have traditionally involved. Whether it’s members of the Royal Family visiting Commonwealth countries or representing the UK abroad, the role is largely symbolic, humanitarian, and diplomatic rather than overtly political.

By listing these activities in a slightly dismissive way, the question reframes them as trivial or performative but in reality, they’re central to what these tours are meant to achieve: visibility for causes, soft diplomacy, and public engagement.

It’s also worth noting that if Harry and Meghan had behaved in a more explicitly political way, they would almost certainly have been criticised for overstepping their roles. Royals are expected to be carefully neutral, so their influence comes through exactly these kinds of engagements.

You are framing simply in order to influence belief in your personal opinion - that is never the whole truth.

They are not working Royals!
That is the whole point.

The OP is perfectly correct in framing the question in the way she did.

performative is this the latest buzz word on GN? 😀

Here we go again. My monthly bashing from DAR for staging my opening posts in a performative manner, and being attention seeking!
Whatever!

If by the ‘horribly spoilt youngest boy’ you mean Andrew, you’ve got the wrong son.

Edward is the youngest, and not guilty of the above.

😂 Oh dear!

Just to clear up another point, the Last Post Ceremony apparently happens daily in Canberra. I'm not sure why The Guardian, no less, referred to it as Anzac Day in the list of engagements I took from there? Apologies, my knowledge of Australia is a bit lacking.

Gallipoli/Anzac Day is next week, 25th April.

The Guardian is not infallible but I am surprised at this faux pas. The reason I had a "discussion" with them a few years ago was about some erroneous information they printed about an event in Australia. Sensationalism on their part.

There was a petition against their visit because taxpayers are footing the bill for security. Not many here like them. Especially her.

Ooh, they are lucky.
Security was not paid for here after they became non-working, a bone of contention for Harry and he has had it reinstated on visits here.

Some believe everything they read in the newspapers

😀

Some like to take the truth, leave out some and embellish the rest with fabpntssy and hatred.
It makes a good story but then so does the actual truth!
