Political commentator, Sam Freedman, is reporting on Bluesky that Orban's opponent, Tisza has won the election in Hungary, seemingly with a supermajority.

Good news I think...

Well done the electorate for a significant turnout too.

LizzieDrip Sun 12-Apr-26 22:36:31

Yes Jaxjacky … 78% turnout; the highest on record in Hungary.

The Hungarian people have spoken loud and clear👏

Orban had just been in power too long, 16 years.Like the Conservatives found last year, people just want a change. Since he was a friend of Putin it’s better for Europe that he’s gone.

Putin has been in Power longer, 2012 to present (and counting), and prior to that 2002 to 2008 after which he was ‘Prime Minister” until he became President again, so even if people there would like a change, it seems to me to be very unlikely to happen any time soon. However, as history seems to show, nothing lasts for ever.

I am pleased that sense has prevailed at last in Hungary. Hopefully they will be able to back Ukraine now and throw off the shackles imposed by Putin. I do hope trump is finding this all very difficult. It could be that the convicted criminal who has yet to pay damages to the woman he was found guilty of sexually assaulting was the main reason Orban has been voted out. Didn’t Vance fly out to Hungary to support Orban and bring a personal message of support from trump? He then had the gaul (sp) to accuse the EU of interference.

We definitely need a united EU, with the UK on board once more to counter the downward spiral which the US is going through. We are too small to go it alone.

Good news but Magyar will face an Orban majority in the Parliament and needs to clear out Orban supporters from the judiciary, armed firces, etc. Not plain sailing.

Wyllow3 Sun 12-Apr-26 23:41:30

Polls suggest however that they will get the 2/3 supermajority of seats needed for pretty total control in Parliament, but you are right about the task ahead.
There's been a lot of corruption, Orban and family lining personal pockets, however.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Apr-26 02:13:41

Hungary is a comparatively small country. The EU is it’s economic bulwark against Putin.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Apr-26 03:05:41

One of the (hopefully) best results from this is that Orban has acted as a lodestar for MAGA cultural warriors and Trump. This is a real set back and perhaps indicates the decline of the far right.

Certainly various elections are pointing that way in the USA.

Oh dear - one of Putin's major arse-lickers has lost his place in The Big Boys Gang.

Maybe, just a whimsical fantasy mind, Trump could offer him a job when he sacks Vance for coming back with no deal? Donald doesn't like a loser, does he (although he himself has been bankrupted at least 6 times, but that doesn't count.)

Trump is apparently too distracted with talking badly about Pope Leo to notice Orban lost. Give him a minute to catch up.

I am elated seeing the crowds celebrating.

ronib Mon 13-Apr-26 05:41:42

Crowds cheering means nothing. Didn’t we all cheer in the UK after the last election and we’re not cheering now?

vegansrock Mon 13-Apr-26 05:51:31

Its great news. I’m with the crowds.

Macaydia Mon 13-Apr-26 06:12:40

Hope in the good riddance.

I didn't cheer after the last UK election. Starmer didn't impress me then, but I thought he was the best choice - and I still feel that way.

I'm disappointed in the direction Labour has gone and I can't believe some of the communication blunders they've made. Nevertheless, I don't personally think there's any better option at the moment. I actually believe Labour has done some good things , but the media is incredibly hostile.

I suspect Magyar in Hungary will experience the same kind of media hostility.

Where on earth are you getting your information. Magyar has gained a supermajority. 133 seats were needed for this, he already has 138. Orban’s party has 55.

Tisza can pass any legislation it cares to and change the Hungarian Constitution. (Which is what Orban did with his supermajority)

Yep just Trump’s cup of tea.
We are one less of his buddies today, cause for all of us to celebrate.

I didn’t cheer when Starmer won, I wasn’t sure at all, but am really glad he is PM at this point in time. If Farage - Trump’s pal - was PM we’d be in the war with Iran up to our necks.

Is there anyone Trump hasn’t
been extremely rude to??
And of course at one and the same time he has now offended millions of Catholics worldwide.
Is there a Noble prize for this?

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 13-Apr-26 08:00:22

The people of Hungary, in a huge turnout, have said that they no longer need the authoritarian, corrupt regime of Mr Orban. Congratulations to them all. They are moving on from their years under the Soviets, then under Mr Orban.
They have much to celebrate.

Wyllow3 Mon 13-Apr-26 08:18:49

Do enjoy a brief peep into this CNN headline (2 hours ago) and has a dig at Trump at the same time
...and the video showing crowds shouting - yes

One thing I think is so good to know is that what the right thought was inevitable - that the March to the right was unstoppable - has had that bubble well and truly pricked. None of the hard right figures look so secure now. Trump and his merry band of cultural warriors are looking decidedly wobbly and his supporters like Farage looking a tad jaded of late.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Apr-26 08:32:37

I hadn’t appreciated until this morning reading different stuff, just how much Reform was tied up with Orban and his corrupt government.

I’m truly amazed at the joyful reaction on here to Orban’s defeat. It’s as though people are blind to how Europe and the UK’s infrastructure, society and culture has been all but destroyed by uncontrolled immigration. It’s a funny old world that’s for sure….

I think that’s quite a broad claim. Immigration is a complex issue, and it brings both challenges and benefits depending on how it’s managed. Framing it as having ‘destroyed’ society or culture risks overlooking that complexity. It might be more useful to focus on specific policies or outcomes rather than generalising about entire groups or trends.

Also, people reacting to Viktor Orbán politically doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ‘blind’ to wider issues. It may just mean they have different views on leadership and policy.

I cheered when Labour won the GE and I’m cheering that Keir Starmer is our PM now👏👏👏

Like the Conservatives found last year, people just want a change. - I think there was a bit more to it than that!

This result in Hungary is a good one as far as I can tell from this distance. Let us hope that they feel life improves for them.
