You used to get them back on beer bottles as i remember taking my dads back to the outdoor

I don't remember ever getting a deposit back on wine bottles in the UK.
I have returned wine bottles in Italy though - but only as part of buying full ones (directly from a vinyard/cantina).

We have friends in both villages, I’m going to ask them what their theories are.

One of the areas they have been dumped is quite remote.

Isn’t it a shame it’s not like the old days and you could take your empties somewhere and get a few pence in return.

It seems very odd.

Why not just put them in the recycling at home, or the big bins at supermarkets?

It sounded like the bottles were from a pub or restaurant, not just casual drinking at home, judging by the quantities of empty (not cheap) bottles of wine.

Very strange.

I do love a good old local mystery but being at the other end of the country my Miss Marple skills (such as they are) won’t be of any use.

Meanwhile, please keep your eyes peeled for our missing capybara who has escaped from Marwell zoo and is enjoying fame if not fortune courtesy of local businesses and their memes.

Unfortunately it looks as though she’s heading in the wrong direction to be spotted quaffing a bottle of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc!

One of my favourites too.
I buy it when Sainsbury’s have 25 % off six bottles but not guilty of dumping my empties m’lud.
It is rather mysterious.
