Hearing some disturbing accounts about that Iranian ship they sank.
It could be that there were joint arranged manoeuvres between Iran and maybe India. And because it was some sort of 'practice' the Iranian ship was unarmed.
And they let the survivors drown.

The activity in Equador is joint operation fighting drug gangs that have spilled over from Columbia. The government in Equador is democratic and friendly with the US, it uses the US dollar as currency. I visited a few years ago, police presence was pretty high then due to terrorist attacks, Im not sure if tourism is a safe option now.
