Johnnie Reynolds Labour MP praised Margaret Thatchers Government live on breakfast news this morning.

She’s still droning on. I had to mute her. 55 minutes. I think she’s coming over as desperate. Rachel Reeves claims to be good at chess. Most chess players understand that knowing your openings and how to develop them is vital.

Well she played the Chancellors Gambit last summer, lost vital pieces and all momentum. I think she’s toast now. The tax hikes haven’t even come into operation yet (start April). It’s going to be a very bumpy ride.

My opinion about Thatcher is that whilst I abhorred most of her policies I did admire her strength of character and single mindedness when following through her aims.

She was a clear minded thinker and ruthless. Her ruthlessness was what lead both to her rise and fall.

I personally have mixed feelings about Mrs T.

She was the first woman prime minister so she lead the way and showed it could be done. She proved to be stronger and more decisive that most of her male predecessors.

She took us into war in the Falklands, she sold off loads of council houses, mishandled the miners' strike, smashed all the unions and destroyed labour relations.

I admit that some unions were wielding too much power and needed to be curbed but they also played an essential part in
ensuring good employment practices. Selling off council houses meant that the private rental market became overheated and the mess we are in today over housing is largely owing to Mrs T's policies.

And it doesn't hurt to remember that political parties, although in opposition, are all part of one country. Maybe a bit more cooperation sometimes would be better for our country.

I am interested to hear what RR has to say about creating a silicone valley between Oxford and Cambridge.

As I understand it we have an established one by the M4 corridor.

Kier Starmer did move a portrait of Thatcher because it was part of a planned reorganisation started by the conservatives when in power. Irrelevant to this point really.
I think it is a good thing if opposing politicians can comment favourably on others. Sadly it's a skill lacking in many these days.

If Starmer didn’t like the portrait frowning down on him that was his decision to move it, pure and simple.

Starmer removed all political portraits - this is an old one - he has chosen instead other sorts of paintings including on loan pictures from National Gallery

If he had really admired Thatcher, I would not have been surprised in the least.

I don't understand the full debate on the runway GG3 because it's been controversial for years.

Various arguments have been - necessary for economy growth - stops planes circling waiting for landing - new aeroplanes are greener - but still will have impact - local concerns

At least Thatcher had clear goals and a vision and principles and stuck by them, which is why many admired her even if they disagreed politically.
