I’ve just got in from work and was pleased to see that he’d resigned.Been better all round if he’d done it yesterday instead of making an announcement that he wasn’t going to.

The whole situation us incredible, apart from the fact that these kind of things are coming to the fore with increasing sickening regularity,

Quite apart from this present scandal he has been killing the Church of England and meddling in things that are none of his business instead of proclaiming the gospel and invigorating the Church to be a vital part of the life of the country.

The case was referred to the police in 2013 by the C of E but not taken up by Hampshire police who took it up 2017, after the Channel 4 investigation.

They worked with the CPS who cleared the case for prosecution/extradition in 2018, Smythe dies.

I can't get my head round what the parents were doing. The BBC says these boys were beaten till they bled. So your son gets home from a camp in pain probably not able to carry his backpack to school wincing if anyone touches him. T shirts in his laundry bloodstained and no parent went to the police? How does that happen. Does no teacher notice? Does no child complain? I don't understand it.

Maybe that was when it was reported to the Police?

Justin Welby is castigated for reading the report in February 2013 and he thought, in error, that the police would take up the case. Starmer needs to make quite clear what his involvement or non involvement was in February 2013 when he was in charge of the CPS. Was it his idea to sit on the report? If not, whose responsibility was it?

Off-topic Miss A, but similarly, years ago a friends BiL worked in television and was very anti Jimmy Savile.
When she told me why he was, I just didn't believe her and wouldn't listen to the "unfounded allegations".
How wrong was I.

I think any pattern is only in your head ronib. Starmer left the DPP role in 2013, so how could he have been involved in any way?

Starmer left in November 2013. The report was released in February 2013.

He shouldn't have been allowed to resign, he should have been sacked and thrown out of the church

I respect the bravery, integrity and independence of mind of the Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, for speaking on behalf of other bishops and clergy.

That surely took some guts in a hierarchical organisation.
