Election Promises

Well so far I’m going to take a wait and see approach, surely people didn’t expect it to be sweetness and light after the terrible state the country is in and can’t expect it to be fixed with a few finger snaps. People quickly forget all the terrible things that the Conservatives were caught doing while in power.

Well it’s hardly been a good start has it? Doesn’t bode well for the future.

Expecting other people to clothe you, accepting free hospitality at sporting events etc can definitely be fixed at the snap of a finger. In fact, had they have acted honourably they would have an awful lot of credibility right now.

I certainly haven't forgotten the terrible things the Conservatives did, but I don't expect any governing party to do terrible things. One doesn't cancel out the other.

I’m really happy I voted Labour! I trust Labour with our public services, which matters to me. No worries about our country under a Labour government from me

IMO terrible start.
The county expected and promised better. So far we have got the opposite.
At the moment I think this will be a one term government, they might have more MP's but not the country's backing.

Just hope they improve. Time to start looking forward, roll up their sleeves, do some hard work and stop blaming their predecessors for everything. Always great hopes with Labour , rarely are the hopes realised.

Why is everyone blaming Labour for the state that our prisons are in? I think they handled the riots incredibly well. I’m heartily sick of the way the right wing media are concentrating on every tiny negative thing they can about the party. I will never forget the things that the Conservative Party have subjected this country to over the past 14 years but am under no illusion as to how much work needs to be done to turn this country around. And, all the time, the Conservative Party are still fighting with each other like rats in a sack and many people think the saviours of this country are going to be Farage, Lee Anderson and Ann Widdecombe.

It's always good politics to get most of the bad stuff out the way early on in a term, then hopefully you'll be in a position to give the electorate a bit of a boost towards the end. I have an issue with universal benefits like WFP, many of us don't need it and it was never intended to be a permanent extra. I think they've been a bit too doom and gloom but better that than making promises they can't keep. Trussenomics (not sure that's a word!) has really affected most of the population negatively except for pensioners with savings/investments, who have gained. No one mentions that, so a bit of re-balancing is in order.
I'm waiting to see what's in the budget and tbh if we end up paying more in taxation, that's OK as like many older people, we're fairly well off. I'd like to see benefits increased for people of all ages who need to claim them. I can't imagine how difficult it must be trying to live on them especially if you are disabled. So far I'm perfectly happy with the Labour Government but it's very early days to make any sort of rational decision.

The freebie were declared. They weren’t lied about it covered up and they were not using taxpayers money or getting contracts unlike the Johnsons and their excesses. If Victoria S wears a British designer dress and that dress sells out it hasn’t cost the taxpayer anything and is a boost for British business. Samantha Cameron and the P of Wales have done the same. I think it’s a shame that the right wing press are on a smear campaign yet supported Johnson, his lies and coverups.

No, I’m not happy with them so far, am really hoping that will change.In my view they made too many promises before the election, more this, more that and moved too speedily once in power to change the things they didn’t need to like the WFA.
I know MP’s are allowed donations but I assumed it was for their office uses.This is the first time in many years of voting for the LP that am left feeling doubtful.

foxie48 that’s all very lovely for you and other well off pensioners but I can assure you there are very many pensioners out there that missing the WFA will affect badly.

So far he is heading in the right direction and in my opinion the criticism is way over the top, we will find out if there really is “light at the end of the tunnel” on budget day. One thing for sure if they continue wasting money in the way the Tories have it’s going to be a very long tunnel

The govt has said it will be imposing fines for those who aren't tagged.

Prisoners weren't being tagged long before Starmer, anyway.

The government are doing small good things that remain untouched in the rush by the right wing press to criticise whilst the big policy issues are in the process of formulation. You dont sort the big ones like the NHS in such a short period.

Am sure there will be things I do agree with coming down the line but I won’t lie, am disappointed it’s a less than a sparkling start.

I'm disappointed in the freebie situation, but that has always been done, before Starmer.

It rules me that anyone on that kind of money feels able to accept extras.

Would be good if Starmer proved to be different, but he isn't in that respect.

I agree with Oreo.
The freebies are actually disgusting.
Some people maybe able to overlook these but I’ve been truly shocked that a man who has set himself up as whiter than white has accepted more freebies than Boris Johnson.

He still has 12 thousand odd pounds before he equals boris.

I'm a very accepting person, and I fully appreciate that the Labour Party had to sort out the doctors' and train drivers' pay in order to avoid winter strikes.
I also accepted that 20% VAT added to school fees was a foregone conclusion, even though this will cost my family an additional £10k a year. Labour had always said they would do this when they came into piwer. They did give adequate warning and people have to accept this.
What I didnt expect was the sudden withdrawal of the WFA, not that I have ever received it, or would need it, but it is an unforgivable move for those who do need it.
But what I am extremely surprised and disheartened by is their hypocrisy, and the way in which they pretend to be oh so virtuous without carrying it through into actions. I really didn't expect that. All a bit two faced.

I have only ever voted Labour twice in my life (once was in the last election). I voted Labour because I'm pragmatic. Realistically, the UK has a two party system. I wanted to oust my MP, whom I detest. I also wanted an alternative to the shambolic Conservative government.

I'm still sitting on the fence about the new government and trying to be objective. I'm not going to fall for the current smear campaigns.
