Sick of Starmer relentlessly using the words"difficult " & "painful"

MissA what kind of sustainability are you into? You must know how fashion is damaging the planet? In fact wonder why Labour isn’t addressing this problem more precisely? How many billions on the environment????

The type of sustainability that comes with being poor.
Don't drive, no holidays, grow food, (as much as I can in pots) shop on ebay and charity shops, and have done since I was a teen, since i wasn't interested in fashion then, either.

MissA well maybe you are the better person- at least you are not pretending to be someone you are not. Nothing wrong with growing from seeds - I find it very beneficial.

Not the slightest bit concerned about Starmer not addressing the issues, because I have full faith that he will.

I just hope it doesnt affect pensioners, because I don't think I could bear any more.

I’m not complying yet very much BUT a subsidised HoC should be stopped immediately. They need to travel 2nd class on rail and be less entitled to expenses.

I’m waiting until the budget to see what else is going to be cut and what taxes are going to be imposed. If the load is spread more fairly ie those who have more, pay more. Unearned income taxed at same rate as earned income etc. I always thought that Starmer’s Labour is rather pale blue in nature! Maybe they will freeze MPs pay or pigs might fly?

I’m waiting to see before I make a judgement on WFA, however if the bus pass disappears I will not be OK! I use my bus pass rather than use the car as it is a dirty diesel and we can’t afford better.

It is the constant mention of "Hardworking Families" which annoys me. It seems to imply that any elderly, disabled, retired, people or students, stay at home mums etc. have no value and make no contribution to society.

Well, it is time that some families hard work is recognised.

It doesn't matter how many times it's said, some think that anyone who needs help is simply "on benefits", which isn't the case.

If I was 61 years old, looked as good as Victoria Starmer, was often in the public eye, and was worth an estimated million, I would be paying that kind if money for designer clothes too. Do you think that the Prime Minister's wife would automatically be a better person if she bought her jackets from charity shops? Isn't it better that she spends her money and helps the economy to move?

How about all the people who are employed in designing, making and selling nice clothes? If it were not worth their while to produce good clothing, well-made to last, there would be nothing but cheap throwaway fashion. Patrick Grant's book "Less" has depressing statistics about how much goes into landfill - and how much of it is made in China.

Rosemary is doing well (well, it was until I said that).

Elegran I read that Lord Alli paid for the designer clothes for Lady Starmer. Not a good look in my book.
Also someone like Debrah Meaden, who is very rich as opposed to aspiring, buys her clothes second hand.
I think the planet needs to come before fashion and it would take a brave politician to do that. Labour seems very pick and mix to me regarding the environment??

I don't care if Lady Starmer showcases British fashion but, if she's worth a million, she really should pay for her own clothes.

Cherie Blair liked a freebie or two but I can't imagine Sarah Brown doing the same.

I disagree that taking away benefits will revive the economy!
Politicians always blame the other lot for everything of course but there’s only so many times they can go on saying it and I’d say that time is here already, so no more mention of black holes if you please Sir Keir.

WFA is a small first step and it was announced early to give warning I don’t think they could have done much else.

You loose £ 200 but pension is increasing by £900, if you really are in difficulties claim pension credit. Others, look out for your relatives and neighbours.

For those on the new state pension there was an increase of £900 in April this year, those of us on the basic pension got less, that is in the past. There is supposedly going to be an increase of £460 next April, again for those on the new state pension but it will be less for those on the basic pension. Taking away the WFA for all was the right thing to do but the timing and manner of the announcement was awful, the threshold for being awarded the WFA is way too low and hopefully there will be some sort of amendment in October’s budget. Of course the Tories could have put forward a proposal to increase the threshold but instead they chose to propose reinstatement of the WFA. Hopefully everybody entitled to Pension Credit will claim it.

Everybody talks about the evils of FPTP until they get elected, then it’s seen as OK.

The Labour Party doesn’t support PR, it wasn’t in the manifesto, and the motion at the conference failed - so no.

Well ,not much that has been forced on us, was actually in the manifesto.

Yes that is my fear. If Starmer, like Blair, succumbs to the wiles of Joe Biden , he'll involve us in a war with Russia, which we can never win.

Starmer’s position in Ukraine was to support the previous governments stance. I’m sure Starmer, like the rest of us will never forget the disastrous invasion on Iraq. No one can deny the danger Putin poses to the world

Having read the first 2 pages of this thread, I wonder why I am on GN. We are all entitled to our opinions of course, we may all have different political expectations, but honestly, some of the posts are silly I honestly think Starmer is trying to kill pensioners.....

I think what they subconsciously mean is that they are "sick of knowing that it is going to be "difficult " & "painful" to sort out the tangles that the country is in." Attacking the messenger is a well-known reaction to bad news, right back to antiquity. That is why those in charge so often fob off the populace with false optimism and half-truths. If they tell the truth about how near to disaster we are and how difficult it will be to pull ourselves out of it, they would be sacked and a new bunch voted in.
