Edna O'Brien Dies At 93

I read The Country Girls so many years ago, I shall have to revisit it, I find myself reading a lot of Irish authors these days

RIP a loss to the literary world.

RIP. A brilliant author who exposed the corrosive influence of Catholicism in Ireland.

Another fan here, I’ve got quite a few of her books somewhere on my shelves, although I haven’t read them for a long time.

A wonderful writer, her books laugh-out-loud funny. I introduced our reading group to Country Girls (all much younger than me) and they just loved it. The BBC play adaptation is also excellent because the characters are such complex individuals from father to Mr Gentleman and her landlady. I first read her when Country Girls was published and caused such controversy and still have an ancient paperback copy, much battered that I have read many times.

Whenever interviewed she was a joy to listen to, interesting and knowledgeable with that lovely accent.

Oh yes. Her voice and way of speaking was wonderful.

There was another book that she wrote fairly recently; can’t remember where it was set…India perhaps. But at an advanced age she went there to research it.

It was called Girl and about the Bocum Haram, set in Nigeria

The Country Girls is wonderful.
One line that always stuck with me was, ‘She was my best friend and I hated her.’ 😂. (Baba, who had the brown legs and the Pink Witch bike.)

Last year I reread The Country Girls Trilogy, it included The Lonely Girls and Girls in their Married Bliss. Very much of their time.
She was a wonderful writer, a joy to read. I always remember hearing her say ‘I don’t read rubbish, it might be catching’. Such a good quote.
