I think it probably is too big and unwieldy, but I'm sure James Cleverly and Simon Case are on the case. (pun unintentional)

For some reason, I have images of Inspector Clouseau in my mind.

Sorry to be the party pooper, but John Reid didn’t actually say it, it was a senior civil servant - but he did want to split the Home Office into two, believing it was too unwieldy and inefficient. At the time he was lambasted by David Davies, the then Shadow Home Secretary for his alleged failure at managing his role.

I have of course studied criminal law in order to qualify but have never practised it, nor did any firm at which I worked take on criminal work. Human rights law - no way. Wasn’t invented when I was studying (that is a joke btw).

I rest my case. My mistake though, I understand from what she has posted that GSM is/was an accomplished and experienced conveyancing and property lawyer, not involved in criminal or, heaven forfend, human rights law. Thus my comment about lefty lawyers, the thrust and irony of which may have escaped you

What a silly comment HPQ. The thread referring to lefty lawyers by GSM did in fact point out further along the discussion that it was Cherie Blair's Chambers that took the case on - not going to get much further left than her ? I would imagine GSM used her professional insight into these type of cases and has much knowledge regarding the type of lawyer that takes on such cases.

The Home Office is yet another thing that doesn't work as it should after 14 years of Tory rule. Not for much longer, hopefully. Going off on a tangent, where is Rishi Sunak these days?

This one case does not make it poorly run organisation but it adds to to the catalogue of errors.

There are many crooked officials in many walks of life. Thinking banks, parliament, welfare, health, education. Nothing special with the home office.

One crooked official doesn't make the HO unfit for purpose. Added to the catalogue of problems, it is a cause for concern.

Maybe the OP should start a new thread about the problems with Atlas and so-called "merged identities" on the computer systems. Frankly, it is a scandal, which the media generally hasn't picked up.

I agree that one crooked official doesn't make the Home Office unfit for purpose. The fact that it's being investigated is a good thing in a way because it shows that bribes won't be tolerated. I would hope that work is going on undercover to investigate any other suspicious activity.
