I did not realise this happened quite so soon, obviously someone had concerns about what was going on quite quickly "the Charity Commission first launched a probe in March 2021 into the Captain Tom Foundation's accounts, which showed in its first year £160,000 was given away in charitable grants, while £240,000 was spent on management and fundraising costs"

As someone who lives in a Listed house (only a fraction of the size of the one this family owns) and who has been through all the procedures necessary for adding anything to the building, I am absolutely amazed that this family thought they could ever get consent for a building this size and so devoid of architectural merit, so close to the house.

One of the questions that needs to be answered when applying for Listed Building planning consent is whether the new building will adversely affect the setting of the main building and anyone looking at this new building that has all the charm of a council community centre, can see that it is oversized, under designed and so close to the house it damages the setting.

The reason they built it first and went then for retrospective planning consent is because they knew if they had submitted an application for a building like this they would never have got consent for it. I cannot see the council being able to do anything other than insist on its demolition.

This documents the salient points. The poor neighbours have that huge construction much closer to their boundaries than the original application. It's much closer to the neighbours than to their house. Such entitlement! They really are very selfish.

We watched the film The Bucket List recently and hope to go to see The Great Escaper this week; not that they are the extent of our bucket lists!

In the last few weeks a lady of 104 did a parachute jump and reached the end of her life the following week. She had done a parachute jump in her 90s and wanted to do another one.

it seems to me entirely reasonable that Captain Tom had always wanted to visit whatever bit of the West Indies he went to, never thought he would so grabbed the opportunity when it was offered.

I am 80 and I truly hope that I will never pass the point when I am not up for a challenge or wouldn't grab the chance to do soemthing I have always longed to do. Visiting Yemen has long been on my 'to do' list. Sadly I think it will be a long time before this war-ravaged country will be welcoming visitors, but it might be in my life time if I live long enough.

Yes, it depends on whether or not he stated the revenue from the books was to go to the charity or if he was to receive the advance and any subsequent profits from sales. Then to his heirs whoever they might be.

Agreed. There was a bit about being pleased to write it because it may help raise money for the charity, which isn't the same at all. I took from that that he meant that those buying it might be prompted to make a donation. That's all. As she said, it was his book, his earnings and up to him who had the profits. 25 year old influencers seem to mention them but I've yet to find an older person .

But I don’t think it has been answered or discussed. If the proceeds were for family then did she not get anything or did it all go to first daughter? Also first daughter is referred to as executor so presumably she was sole executor with sole responsibility? Either second daughter received funds and is complicit or is standing back completely but where is her share?

When my Mum was given an approximate time left on this mortal coil by her consultant, my sister and I asked her what she wanted to do and where she wanted to go.

We were fortunate to be able to facilitate all her wishes.

If it was one of Captain Tom’s bucket list wishes I do not think we should judge his family for honouring it.

Try looking at the accounts of companies set by the daughter - Club Nook Ltd which received £800,000 from the books and The Captain Tom Foundation. The latter's accounts can be found on Companies House. The former is also on Companies House but has been "filleted" - ie no income and expenditure account.

Yes, I know about those companies. My point is that people still talk as if the daughter took some of the money the public sent when the Captain was doing the laps of his garden, no matter how often NHS Charities Together is mentioned.
( Not that I’m saying her behaviour wasn’t ill-judged at best!)

Yes, I believe Captain Tom had long wanted to go to Barbados. But I can’t help but wonder why this already wealthy family didn’t take him when he was 70, 80 or 90 even. Why wait until he was 100, in frail health and Covid was rampant ? Did they use their own money ? The spa was an outrageous vanity project. And insisting that he had wanted the family to keep the proceeds from the books makes Captain Tom appear as grabby as they are, which I find unforgivable. I hope there is a full investigation into this matter .The husband is I believe a Chartered Accountant and his wife a successful business woman. As far as I am concerned the only money Captain Tom's family should have taken from the funds he raised is reimbursements for any costs they and he incurred in raising the money and the costs of running the charity.

As chief executive of the charity his daughter should have received a salary commensurate with those paid to the executives running similar small simple charities. Not a salary comparable with those running large complex charities like Oxfam or Age UK.

I am sure that the family have done nothing that is criminal, But there is such a thing as a moral code and I do consider that their behaviour falls well below what most people would consider moral.

I thought he wanted to go to Barbados anyway and he still had a choice. I think we need to be really careful about taking choice away from people who are elderly or disabled because sometimes it’s the only thing they have control over iykwim
