Having stood outside voting stations as a teller (not canvasser) we were strictly instructed to say nothing to people going into vote, only ask them, politely afterwards, if they would give us their poll number.
It is used to compare with our list of people who were known party supporters, so that we could contact them later in the day, if they had not voted.
