And that is exactly what this argument is about (although some of the Tory sheeple will not realise that is what they are doing).

Listening to a Tory hard-right MP complaining this morning, his only interest seemed to be what Lineker earns. In any other organisation where the friends and allies of the right seem to be overpaid, they would be swift to tell us that the person is paid that amount because of the income he/she adds to the business. I imagine the BBC does much the same when working out what they can afford to pay Lineker. It would be reasonable to assume that salaries for freelancers are worked out relative to the revenue they generate. So, if you are a Tory, it's one rule for the rich company CEO and another for a sports presenter just because he does not toe the Conservative party line.

This same MP kept repeating that the Lineker tweet was offensive. Free speech means we are allowed to offend. He could not and did not say that it was wrong in its facts, but that those who use such provocative language cannot cope with being called out on it. A small child slaps another small child but tells all the rest in the playground that they cannot "tell". Seriously?

It seems you think it is acceptable to label Casdon's actions as "sinister" and imply she is a troll in order to detract from your own lack of transparency. In fact, it doesn't require too much effort to look at a specific person's posts on Gransnet. I think, for the sake of clarity, it is important that this facility is available, as some people are either very forgetful as to what they have said or knowingly seek to disclaim it.

On my online planner that shows as London News (I don't live in London) and on the TV it shows as 'Local News' (no region specified), but is full of right-wing commentators such as Jeremy Kyle and David Bull. I haven't found anything I want to watch on there, but it's just occurred to me that it is probably GB News.

I don't hang on every word that Lineker says, I just defend his right to have an opinion, as a citizen of this country. Big difference. I loathe the very idea of a news programme headed by Farage or Dorries but I defend your right to watch it. This is what a free society is about, you won't notice it's gone until it's too late.

I totally agree with Siope's post about the rotten, corrupt legacy from Johnson which is tainting everything in public life. It is an interesting co-incidence that the most vociferous critics of Lineker's tweet are ardent viewers of GB News.

I won't be cancelling my TV licence, I don't watch Lineker or any other sports pundit because I don't watch sports, I also don't watch quiz shows, or reality TV, but that is all personal and free choice and that I defend.

BoJo has a lot to answer for including appointing a Tory donor as Chair of the BBC. Today's announcement is designed to take the heat out of the controversey and kick the can down the road by setting up an independent inquiry. One suspects the Tory government was as shocked as the BBC at the level of support for Lineker and wanted the issue shelved so as not to gobble up media attention which they would prefer to see on Tory initiatives (such as they are).

Yes. Let’s get rid of programmes like Happy Valley, The English, Gardeners World, all the David Attenborough programmes, Radio 6 ( the best music station there is) etc etc. Because the BBC is far more than just its news programmes ( which I don’t listen to). I just hope the government don't use this as an excuse to do away with the BBC altogether.

I disagree, Maudi. What about people who have no money for a subscription? Also, there are those who simply won't pay for anything they can get free, whether they 'can afford' it or not, so would opt for ad-carrying channels and be swayed by the control of those paying for the ads, who would not allow any reporting of anything that might affect their profits. Having an independent (in theory at least) public broadcasting service is incredibly important to democracy, as this debacle has shown.

I think it should be funded more generously - maybe not from licences but from public money - and there should be a representative board of directors who are not, and never can be, influenced by the government (eg members should never be allowed to get a peerage or stand for parliament).

Me too, well done Gary, and well done sports people, you have done the cause of free speech proud.

Just listening to JOB - listeners seem in some agreement that the government is running scared that sport is getting involved in disagreement over the Tory policy, because it will reach a much bigger audience than is normally the case.

That is why it is being closed down asap.
