I agree Aveline, there probably never has been a golden age, apart from perhaps in the fantasies of some Brexit voters who were looking backward to some mythical age, but it has to be acknowledged that many services which we have all become used to, have definatily got worse, the NHS being the most obvious. Yes, we are all aware of the great work, of the lengths the staff go to, but we are also all too aware of the 12 hour waits for ambulances, the lack of home care, of people waiting in great discomfort on ever lengthening waiting lists. It seems to me that most public services are held together by the good will and unpaid overtime of the staff, whether it be teachers, nurses or doctors, and everything else we need is being provided by an army of volunteers wo run foodbanks, clothing banks, run clubs for children, for the elderly. Worthwhile though this is (and I am such a volunteer), it should be supplementing, not replacing state provision.
