When I was a schoolgirl in year 7 ,aged about 12 , we were solemnly ushered into the school,assembly hall and told that our families needed to prepare shelters and store tinned food. Sandbags were mentioned as a good protective measure.
What a load of balderdash, as if we would survive. I think it was during the Cuban missile crisis. When we were in Hungary we were shown an underground shelter with beds and facilities. Very large , quite amazing.
