Excellent news!
Boris Johnson is installing one of his most senior ministers as chief of staff in a move designed to help relaunch his premiership and signal a return to core Conservative values.
“Steve Barclay, the Brexiteer Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, will become the Prime Minister's most senior aide. Mr Johnson said his appointment would strengthen the role of Cabinet ministers and MPs.
Mr Barclay, a former whip, is seen as hawkish on the economy and kept a tight rein on public spending as chief secretary to the Treasury, under Mr Sunak, before joining the Cabinet Office last year. One Tory source said: "He does get it and was very good at the Treasury”

Boris Johnson hires Brexiteer Steve Barclay as top aide in 'return to Tory values'
(127 Posts)What brings you to that conclusion?
I'm not a Tory but this is getting really embarrassing now and surely for the sake of the whole of the UK he realises he should stand down now and not prolong things or make any more ridiculous gaffs.
Rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic comes to mind.
I seem to remember David Frost being lauded as the next messiah. Straw clutching springs to mind.
Is it possible to combine the work of an MP with the responsibilities of chief of staff?

I’m not sure it is either constitutionally correct or legal.
Surely it is a conflict of interests?
I’d have thought so whitewave but what do we ordinary mortals know
I d stop while the goings good Umstrongran I can’t really see how many more times you can resurrect your joy at something Johnson has done

Nothing apparently?.
Politicising the civil service?
A return to core Conservative values
So those would be the values they held before the dreadful Cameron and Johnson premierships.
Personally I hope Boris Johnson remains as PM. He lies and has the morals of an alley cat but he is the only one bold enough to take us through the current situation.
Firstly Brexit has given us the opportunity to break free of the EUs hysterical clamp down on internet companies, the closed lobbyist dominated system of rule making that is hostile to innovation. We can attract tech industries in their droves.
We can ensure that any deal with the EU does not allow them to regulate the app economy in this country.
Planning rules can encourage big, prestige, flexible office space in our northern cities that attract tech industries.
We need to deregulate competitively and put in place legislators and regulators brave enough to allow experimentation so that new innovation can flourish.
Make the U.K. an attractive destination for start ups, cut capital gains tax to zero, give automatic permanent visas to entrepreneurs starting a company with a £50k investment.
I do believe, based on his performance as mayor, that Johnson is bold enough and brave enough to go for it.
If the media and staunch remainers will give him a chance and stop the perpetual witch hunt we may just pull our country back. If not we can change everything at the next election.
I hope Steven Barclay can calm things down so that Johnson can do what he does best. Encourage, persuade, incentivise and boldly go.
It would be really helpful if Ug could tell us what the core tory values are.
I for one don't have a clue and I'm pretty sure that if Barclay is a staunch Brexiter they won't be what people think they are...
laurenorder -“based on his performance as mayor” - that’ll be wasting millions on failed vanity projects, lying about closing police and fire stations, his deputies resigning in quick succession, visiting his lovers flat when he was supposed to be working…… I wouldn’t use that job as a good example - why not base it on his performance as Foreign Secretary or PM.?

Almost as often as other GN members sneer and whinge about every breath that Boris takes.
As mayor of London Boris Johnson showed an instinctive understanding of how innovation can drive wealth creation. He was responsible for 22pc of Britain’s GDP. He certainly pushed forward the transformation from financial city to tech hub with more billion dollar start ups than any other capital in Europe. We now need to spread that out to northern cities.
We can give it a fair go or we can damn him and our country to oblivion because of parties and loose morals.
Do we want wealth creation, a better standard of living for all and a proud global reputation or do we want a bland Starmer government and to be an honest and honourable puppet of Europe.
We can still stop the not so good stuff so pouring sewage in to the sea is not an argument. A go ahead country encouraging investment and growth will enable us to deal with any other obstacles.
Tech is the way forward and BJ instinctively understands that even if he’s not capable of using half of it.
Then why is sewage pouring into the sea and rivers and has been for a while?
he is the only one bold enough to take us through the current situation
Larry the cat could do a better job!

Thanks for that, I needed a good laugh. Something to take my mind off the 160,00ish deaths on AB deP Johnson's watch.

Oh, he had lessons in tech, didn't he?
Now what was her name? Jennifer something wasn't it?
He certainly invested a few grand in her...

Excellent alley cat cross reference LauraNorderr I hadn’t noticed that before.
He also allowed Russian oligarchs to buy up whole blocks of luxury apartments in London.
