He says in the Telegraph just now:
“ ...as the official number of arrivals for 2021 heads towards 25,000 (we still don’t have the Home Office figures for Tuesday 16 November) it does seem as though something is beginning to change. Reports are circulating that the Prime Minister has become fretful. As well he should. On his watch, the mantra of “taking back control” of our borders has descended into farce.
The biggest problem Boris Johnson faces is not the sheer impracticality and cost to the public purse of housing, clothing, feeding and giving free healthcare and education to huge numbers of people who have chosen to leave the safety of France to come to this country. Neither is it the daily expense of conducting the Channel operations. Instead, it is the threat to Britain’s national security and the safety of its citizens. Johnson is ultimately responsible for guarding his people. This is the sacred duty of any prime minister. It should override all others. Yet the present occupant of 10 Downing Street seems to have abandoned his post.”

Well, you have a point there. And I for one would be very happy to see the 'right' side of votes be split- as as the 'centre-left' is forging clever alliance to ensure their side of the vote is NOT split. That would be really great.
Paul Dacre and Farage should have a chat over a pint. ??
And what solutions do you think they will come up with. BTW what would be yours - a big fence all around UK? And then what?

JE is asked for a solution?
No idea.
I’m asking, if an asylum application was rejected in 2008, THIRTEEN years ago, then why was he still here?
Because our asylum system is useless!
Needs a complete overhaul.
And how will you stop them coming over, now we have lost the goodwill of our neighbours and partners?
Change our laws? Or at least alter the terms and conditions we currently offer.
They were coming over in droves when we did have the ‘goodwill’ as you term it from our neighbours and partners. The camps in Calais and other places were there for years with the migrants trying any way they could to get here.
They certainly didn’t wish to stay in France! Still don’t.

But this issue like Brexit does not split nicely down party lines. Voters will have very strong views on this and party loyalties will count for nothing. It's not just nasty tories who want very strict boarder controls.

I read that his initial asylum claim was made in 2014. 21 minus 14 is 7.
So that’s 6y too many then.
Maybe true, but might as well get facts correct.
Indeed growstuff.
Just awful though when we think that once his claim was rejected (maybe allowed ONE appeal) he should have been deported.
Urmstongran
Although he might not win - Farage would seriously put enough conservative MP's at risk of losing their seats to make Boris do something .... similar to Brexit.
He couldn't even win a seat in Thanet which is Brexit central. Voters in this country maybe don't think overly carefully before they vote, may vote Tory or Labour "because they always have" but thankfully, even Farage is a step too far. He is nothing more than a nasty old white man who stirs up racists.

His appeal for asylum was rejected in 2014 and not 2008 apparently.
Our asylum system is not fit for service.
Trouble is Brexit has made this situation worse. It was won on a promise to take control of our borders, even though more migrants came here from non EU countries than EU ones and little had been done to control this. France actually takes more asylum seekers than the U.K. as does Germany and Sweden , so the idea they are “all coming here” is erroneous. Brexit broke all existing controls so no reason to expect EU countries to stop any asylum seekers from travelling to the U.K. and the idea that any country can patrol 100s of miles of coastline day and night is ridiculous. Personnel had been cut from all areas of public service, so no hope of swift processing of asylum claims, meanwhile no ID system means it’s much easier to work illegally in the U.K. The expectation that a Tory government , who have slashed spending on everything over the past 10 years, will suddenly find an efficient and workable answer to this problem is a joke, which like the PMs jokes, is not funny.
Brexit wasn’t about immigration - apparently?
25,000 is not that huge an amount. I thought it would be a lot higher. How many left?

Good post
I do wish that Ug hadn't felt the need to illustrate her OP. The sight of the subject gurning at me every time I open the thread makes me feel quite ill...
and it's not as if we're children who need pictures to go with the text
Oh me too Maizie.
No comment on the subject,
But I do quite like pictures with the text. Adds a bit of colour and interest.
