A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

That’s all right MaizieD as not everyone would want to be meeting you for tea either.?

GagaJo Thu 14-Jan-21 21:27:45

I'd happily have tea with her. She has morals and ethics and cares about others.

But Maizie, more importantly, you don't put the milk in first, do you?

This thread is becoming quite unpleasant, leave or remain is not the total sum of a person.
Some bitter people on here I'm afraid.

lemongrove Thu 14-Jan-21 21:31:41

It amazes me that those who voted to Remain four years ago are even worse on the threads now then they were back then!
Ah well, as Hetty says, the UK has more to worry about now with Covid, the aftermath of Covid etc which makes Brexit pale into insignificance ( as momentous events go.)

lemongrove Thu 14-Jan-21 21:33:49

Absolutely soda ??
Unfortunately some people see things only in terms of black or white.

GagaJo Thu 14-Jan-21 21:33:49

That's rich LG, YOU were the one saying you didn't want Maizies company. Make your mind up. Either get down and dirty OR be polite. You can't claim both when the documentary evidence is in front of us!

Have a cup of tea and chill out.

Totally agree, Sodapop

Makes me laugh as to who we would have tea with.

As a Reaminer I'm going to be sitting with the Brexiters.

Far more interesting, more intelligent and a decent conversation can be had with them.

Those who wish to remain in an echo chamber, do enjoy

I prefer all sorts of people in my life All sorts of attirtudes and beliefs

Thank goodness for young people who haven't wwndered into set and stagnant ways

lemongrove Thu 14-Jan-21 21:36:20

Nope Gaga see the above post by Maizie .....she doesn’t want the company of anyone who voted leave.....then goes on to say various calumnies about any leavers.I was simply pointing out that it may work both ways.

There are some strange people who won’t meet anyone with differing political views from themselves, it’s not just Brexit.
I often wonder how much they really enjoy life.

For those who think that Armageddon arrived with leaving the EU, accept it has happened and wait and see how you feel in another four years.Covid has been the real Armageddon as far as the economy is concerned.

But not everybody who voted Remain is mean, and not everybody who voted Leave is civil - there is a pattern of the same posters constantly having it out between themselves on lots of different threads, goading each other and getting very personal and nasty in the comments they make.

I find it upsetting to read how little some people hear or understand the points other people make, and I really wish there was a bit more humanity (and humour) on the political threads.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 14-Jan-21 22:04:55

For the record I have close friends of every political persuasion, race, religion and both leave and remain voters.

I do not belong to any gang on GN, nor do I report posts because they disagree with my views, unlike others posters.

I made ONE comment to UG lemongrove. I don't have a problem at all with her. She offers a good discussion, which I enjoy. Now, as you have on the other thread, you can make something from nothing if you wish, but I am withdrawing from responding from this point.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jan-21 22:08:22

Hi everyone - I went AWOL watching ‘The Pembrokeshire Murders’. Not p.’ming people Gaga!

I really think that given time these divisions will heal. Life is so much more than Brexit, sadly so at present.

To the future eh? May it be successful for all of us
??

GagaJo Thu 14-Jan-21 22:09:51

I didn't imagine you were UG. Better things to do.

lemongrove Thu 14-Jan-21 22:14:58

?gin and tonic Urmstongran ?

Dinahmo Thu 14-Jan-21 22:27:35

Urmstongran

Well said Hetty58.

I'm not assuming anything. You are imputing far too much in my comment. I have commented several times on covid related topics, including one which you would no doubt disagree with. That Johnson should have asked for an extension because of the disruption being caused by covid.

Dinahmo Thu 14-Jan-21 22:30:19

My mouse slipped when selecting the quote. I intended to qoute Hetty58 But &Urmstongran* will do just as well.

Gaga ... THIS was the comment I thought mean spirited & bitter ...

And I will never have enough common ground with you or other Leavers that would induce me to have tea with them. So count me out of your little party..)

Wowzer!
See what I’m getting at here?

Which is also why I stay über calm. Getting riled up gets one reported. It’s not worth a smack down from the moderators.

Play nice is my motto.
?

I think Maizie is right. I know a couple here who have lost many of their friends and acquaintances because or their stance on Brexit. In the early days one could hear his voice across a room full of people stating "the German car manufacturers...." etc etc.

GagaJo Thu 14-Jan-21 22:41:41

Ultimately (and I have thought about this a lot, because I have also given up friends who are too different to me) you need to have things in common with friends. To be honest, I had NO Brexit supporting friends.

But I DID have 2 Trump supporting friends in the US. They were people I had worked with that seemed fine. But they were pro gun lobby, had racist opinions that I hadn't noticed while working with them and were VERY pro Trump. One of them, a rape survivor, supported the promotion of Brett Cavanagh.

It was really sad, and I told the one I really liked why I was doing it. And she was sad too. But then she made ANOTHER racist comment. So...
