A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

In some ways I hope it goes badly and the government is forced to beg to rejoin, with or without a referendum.

A Remainer’s wet dream, right there. Not even another referendum. No wonder Jo Swinson got trounced for suggesting it and left the Lib Dem’s unelectable.

Great post Cindersdad

Cindersdad

Though I have not yet been affected by Brexit I have always said that it was and continues to be a colossal mistake. Over the coming months it will strike home though masked by Covid affecting more of us. In some ways I hope it goes badly and the government is forced to beg to rejoin, with or without a referendum. That will have to wait for Covid to be largely controlled and the Brexiteer bunch consigned to history.

We need a coalition government made up of pragmatic members from across the political spectrum followed in due time by a general election held on a fair votes basis. Wishful thinking but the Trumpian government here cannot fully distance itself from the disasters of populism. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and other high profile Brexiteers need to be made accountable, some of their colleagues may be redeemable. As for the likes of Nigel Farage, Jabob Rees Mogg, Aaron Banks, Steven Baker and ERG MP's they should at least be barred from holding office for life. They only wanted a low tax country at any cost and did not care who they hurt in the process.

I do believe in Free Speech and democracy but with that must come honesty, objectivity and compassion plus accountabilty for misleading the public. You can forgive genuine mistakes in time but deliberate well thought out destruction of democracy can never be forgiven. Dominic Cummings and Cambridge Analytica have a great deal to answer for here and in America. Witch hunt may be but a line has to be drawn somewhere, some of them have crossed the lines of democractic administration.

Needs to be repeated .

Such a good post

I'm sure I have asked this before UG and you objected to the question but, in view of your rather offensive post I will ask again.

Do you approve of what Trump has done in the USA?

Parsley3 Thu 14-Jan-21 12:21:00

I will give you your due UG. You stick to your guns, no matter what, with an unwavering tenacity in your beliefs. It is quite the achievement to never display a doubt or a second thought in the face of opposing arguments.
Respect.

It's just a shame that her guns are made of plastic...

I’m not agreeing AT ALL with any incitement to violence. Totally wrong.

I don’t live in the USA so I’ve no skin in this game. I suppose I play Devil’s Advocate sometimes, just pointing out to all the Democrat fans on here that more than 70 million (just let that number of voters sink in for a minute) are very disappointed right now.

Like our Brexit result, the majority of them will get over it. But in the short term some nutters will be angry. Trump has done himself untold damage by whipping up hysteria amongst a certain faction of supporters. I have no respect for how he has behaved. It’s over. I don’t think he will be impeached. The numbers don’t stack up.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jan-21 12:48:06

I don’t recall ever shying away from that question PippaZ?
I don’t remember objecting to anything.

He's already been impeached again, it happened last night. Finger on the pulse there, UG

He hasn’t just recently whipped up hysteria amongst his supporters, though. For years he has said there would be voting fraud before elections but then decided they weren’t fraudulent if he won. It’s been part of his long term plan. It isn’t over and it won’t be over for a long time. For some reason a lot of poorer Americans seem to have a loathing of the Democrats.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jan-21 13:00:39

Sort Alegrias I know an impeachment has been passed by votes yesterday that Pelosi (another nutter who just scraped in at the election - nearly ousted there) such a bitter woman.

Anyway I thought there was more to be decided by a vote? Maybe I’m wrong. I’m an infrequent observer of how the American system works!

Actually are we posting on the wrong thread?
Isn’t this the Brexit one? How did it morph?
Like a conversation I suppose!

Because you didn't answer the question grin Had you done so it would have naturally brought us back to the referendum, etc., etc.

Smileless2012 Thu 14-Jan-21 13:24:35

confused how do you reconcile your hope that Brexit goes so badly the government is forced to beg to be allowed back in, with or without a referendum, with your statement that you believe in democracy Cindersdad?

If you believed in democracy regardless of the result of the referendum, you'd accept the result.

More than 4 years of claims that the referendum was based on lies, was fraudulent and illegal. Let's hope we don't have to listen to Trump continuing with the same claims for as long.

PippaZ Thu 14-Jan-21 13:26:16

I suppose I play Devil’s Advocate sometimes, just pointing out to all the Democrat fans on here that more than 70 million (just let that number of voters sink in for a minute) are very disappointed right now.

But this was a chance for those who have seen what Trump is made of to come out in even greater numbers. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Nigel Farage, Jabob Rees Mogg, Aaron Banks, Steven Baker and ERG have also been recognised for what they are but no second vote for those who now outnumber their supporters.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jan-21 13:31:45

Different strokes for different folks I suppose PippaZ. All any of us can do is put a cross on a ballot paper when the correct time comes along.

That’s democracy.

Or ... we can campaign for a second referendum or attempt to get a GE vote that would change things. Trump was trying to suppress any possibility of change away from his power as were some in this country led by Johnson. This is what creates in your mind the fact that YOU believe it is ok to suggest other people's views are "A Remainer’s wet dream, right there."

Those currently in power in this country would not allow a second vote and did not give us a first one that was balanced for the fact that we would not be able to vote on it again.

varian Thu 14-Jan-21 14:07:40

The overwhelming weight of opinion polls have shown that the majority think we were wrong to vote to leave the EU.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jan-21 14:38:40

No PippaZ don’t misquote me please. I was referring of course to unilaterally revoking the result of the referendum as posited bet Cindersdad which was (unsurprisingly) so heavily endorsed not once, but twice (!) by MaizieD and WhiteWave. That would indeed be a Remainer’s ideal scenario. Let’s just disregard the referendum eh? A lá Jo Swinson! And look where her views took her ...
?

And varian those who could be bothered took themselves down to the polling booths on the day or arranged for a postal vote. The result stands.

Yes, sadly, some people who voted to Leave will have died (my mum for one, RIP lovely lady), some - both ways actually - will have changed their minds and some young ‘uns who weren’t old enough to vote last time would be eligible now and could give their opinions to a pollster.

Who believes the polls get it right anyway? Mostly they don’t.
And anyway, the referendum was held. People voted in good faith according to their viewpoint.

It’s over.
It stands & it won’t be re-run.

Alexa Thu 14-Jan-21 14:46:26

It is not entirely fair to blame voters for Brexit. There was a huge advertising campaign by the Conservative party to get people to vote Brexit.People were lied to.

I knew they were lies, so did 16 million other people. What does that say about the people who didn't know, or didn't care?

(Hard hat on)

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Jan-21 14:52:00

Nothing lasts for ever. Brexit won’t last as nothing about it makes any sense at all.

MaizieD Thu 14-Jan-21 14:57:06

I knew they were lies, so did 16 million other people. What does that say about the people who didn't know, or didn't care?

It certainly doesn't say anything that makes one feel any empathy with them.

What is still intriguing me is that we have a very bad 'deal', that ties us in to the EU's 'rules' without having any say and which will give us even more economic grief if we try to diverge from them. Yet the Leavers really don't seem to have grasped this. I would have thought they'd be furious about it.

So we've ended up still closely tied to the EU but on much worse terms than when we were a member.

Why on earth did we bother?

Alexa Thu 14-Jan-21 15:32:05

Well, there are always going to be gullible people.
