Jeremy Corbyn suspended from Labour Party

Honestly in the scheme of things Corbyn is pretty unimportant. We have so much to deal with. Covid, Brexit and the worst government. In living memory.

One individual makes very little difference, unless of course you wish to make him a cult. .

Devorgilla Len Mccluskey hasn't said anything about starting a new party. He is urging members not to leave Labour.

As a LP member (and jewish), I find the report rather strange to say the least. Still think that there is total confusion about being anti-semitic and being anti-Israel. Corbyn has fifty plus years of strong, continuous anti-racist stands and actions.

As, back in the long distant past in the LP I did not under-estimate the power of Catholic Action, I do not, now under-estimate the power of the Jewish Board of Deputies. Whereas, both may go under religious names, they have strong political views, and the Board of Deputies is strongly pro-Israel, in all circumstances and could never take a left wing, socialist, anti-Israel leader of the opposition.
The suspension of Corbyn is more than an over-reaction - it is in hopes that it will lead to the left wing members of Constituency Labour Parties will throw in the towel, resign and give the party over - totally to the Starmar and his ilk.

Must admit I was very tempted to go along this route at first, but have given it more thought, attended the on-line meeting held last night of supporters of Corbyn, and am determined to stay in there.

My understanding is that the issue is not that Corbyn is anti-semitic or racist (although that is a moot point), rather that he was totally ineffectual in dealing with cases of anti-semitism in the LP.
He was in charge of a party which was guilty of unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination.

Corbyn then claimed that the anti-semitism had been dramatically overstated and was suspended because he refused to retract that statement.

Ilovecheese, you are right. McC did not on this specific occasion (the EHRC report) call for a new party although I am pretty sure he has mooted that idea on previous occasions. That was definitely the impression Grandad1943 gave when he was posting.

As I remember McCluskey did not mention a new party simply that if the party moved more to the right the Union would consider moving its funding to other organisations at grass roots level.
I was thinking about Jennie Formby a year after having set up the new processes for dealing with anti-semitism she was diagnosed with breast cancer. All new initiatives need monitoring and adjustments. She possibly wasn't able to cope and this led to some of the failings described.
Callistemon If you read the report there was a considerable back log of cases and a policy of ignoring complaints before 2015 and after. It was only when Corbyn introduced new processes in 2018 that things began to be dealt with. It wasn't enough but it was more than had existed before.

The EHRC report explicitly states that Corbyn is not only entitled to exactly that opinion, but that his right to express it is protected by human rights law – and even that as an MP he has enhanced protection:

Statements made by elected politicians have enhanced protection under Article 10.

Article 10 will protect Labour Party members who, for example, make legitimate7 criticisms of the Israeli government, or express their opinions on internal Party matters, such as the scale of antisemitism within the Party, based on their own experience and within the law.

It looks like Labour hasn’t read, or doesn’t care, that Corbyn was perfectly entitled to say what he did – and perfectly entitled not to retract it.

All Starmer is doing by behaving like this, is proving what a devious, untrustworthy person he really is. Someone should tell him when you are in a hole, stop digging.

That's right after all he has only been proved right in pretty much every decision so far. Has ensured that Johnson has had to make a u turn, but yes what has he achieved for people so far. And ensured that labour remains ahead in the polls. So to be honest if that's a hole I would like him to continue digging.

Speaking as someone who was so in despair at the labour party I voted differently at the last election(not tory) it's a very bad idea. People are dying. I was utterly wrong, and I think I understand the anger that Trisher feels and how seductive that anger can be. I think it's a mistake but then again I would.

FFS I am not "angry" I am desperately worried that there is now no effective LP that what we have is a media hungry leader, who might have been involved with subversive elements in the party (and certainly hasn't investigated them, but paid them off), who isn't really interested in opposing the legislation passing through parliament, who has a debatable concept of the truth and who seems quite willing to split the party for his own reasons.

That's right trusher Starmer hasn't investigated right wing culprits And has paid them off!

Yes in the same way I was deeply worried and hurt by a leader who seemed to tolerate endless misogyny and was ineffective in dealing with antisemitism. I was deeply worried that as I viewed it a deeply ineffective leader was so self absorbed that he was going to allow a landslide tory victory, deeply worried about a view of the EU that was against everything I held dear.
