I haven't read all the thread but I really cannot see why he should resign for this. He wasn't visiting his lover or his second home. His wife was ill and he must have realised that, with all around him dropping like flies and perhaps already having some possible symptoms he might be ill too. He had a young child and he went to where, as I understand it, siblings could help him. They were not, again as I understand it, going on a quick visit to grandparents. He legally needed to provide care for his child or you would all be tearing him to pieces or that.
If you were to ask if he should resign because he has to great an amount of unelected power then yes, I would agree he should. Just as I imagine others would do if the boot was on the other political foot in this instance.
I would just add that I hope the safeguarding clause was known to all those shut down in the early days. I am not sure it was. That doesn't stop me thinking it should exist.
