New hospitals anyone

While hospitals in the US are constructed to resemble 5 star resorts they don't provide 5 star healthcare-

The rules on diversity in public services are that people from protected categories have to be guaranteed an interview, if they tick all the boxes for the requirements of the job.

They cannot be turned down just because they have a disability, without consideration being given to the possibility of reasonable adaptations, although there is some evidence that they are.

However, they are not given any special favours when they get to the interview stage. It's a fallacy that they are or that public services have to fulfil quotas.

I'm afraid your husband was unlucky on the day or maybe there was somebody better suited for the job. Sorry!

There aren't many hospitals in the UK which resemble 5* resorts rosecarmel, although plenty of them do provide first class treatment and care.

Theoddbird I'm not complaining at all about getting a new hospital. It's been on the cards for ages. It's desperately needed to replace the existing hospital and plans were already at an advanced stage, before the government's announcement.

What I'm complaining about is that this doesn't appear to be "new money" and the government is taking the credit without justification.

It just so happens that one of those hospitals is my local hospital and I've been following the saga for years. I really don't know what the story is with the other five hospitals, which it's promised will be built.

I missed the bit about explaining where the money is coming from. Is there any chance you could explain or give me a link.

Living in the southeast where in my area we have 1,000 houses per annum being built there is absolutely no way that the existing hospitals and surgeries can cope. The just weren’t built to cater for these numbers. At the moment our GP surgery is being demolished to build a new one on the same site because there are now so many new houses and therefore new patients. Some old hospitals just aren’t fit for purpose and like rabbit warrens!

I think Matt Hancock is actually quite a decent guy and he's struggling with all the lies he's having to tell...

Perhaps I have missed something - but what I heard in the interview was that the money is not for "New" hospitals at all, but for renovating and possibly re-building EXISTING hospitals - starting with six, which are mostly in London or the South of England! The remaining 46 are to be give "seed money" to "prepare plans" The point was made about the lack of staff, and this was claimed to be "being dealt with by previously announced measures". I agree that we do indeed have many Victorian hospitals which are mostly unfit for purpose. PFI was said to be NOT considered for this programme - however, Politicians are not renowned for telling the exact truth - so, decide for yourselves what you believe!

The money is to go to renovating crumbling infrastructure, at least locally. What we need is a new hospital, rather than puring the money into a badly managed Trust. And not a PFI one either, although I have not heard of any of those being built for a long time, they were a financial disaster.

In Harlow, the plan is definitely to build a new hospital. Apparently, the old one costs over a £million a year just for maintenance. It was built in the 1960s, not to a very high standard, not long after Harlow was developed as a new town for London overspill. Since then, the town has mushroomed and serves a much larger area because small hospitals and units have been shut.

As I remember, the Government announced a couple of years ago that there would be no more PFIs.

Firecracker123, goodness...touchy. Fact: the Tories removed the bursary that student nurses received, approximately five thousand pounds a year. Nurses now have to pay the same university fees as other students. Result is that really people don't really want to train. Why spend thirty thousand plus, come out with all those debts for a career where the majority of staff earn under thirty thousand pounds a year for life? The Tories cut the numbers of medical students being trained. We now have a shocking fall in the number of home trained staff. Add to that the disaster that is Brexit where we have lost literally thousands and thousands of doctors and nurses who were made to feel unwelcome after the (non legally binding poll) by idiots telling them to go home! The NHS will now be going to various countries outside of the EU based in Asia and Africa and bring over staff on contracts based on three year stints. Apparently not exactly thousands queueing up either, realising that there is a hostile attitude to staff from overseas and a country that is fast becoming openly racist. Im a nurse and frankly wouldn't practice anymore, I couldn't in all honesty, look after some of the public.

I can't say I blame you Solonge. I remember just before my mother died that there was a woman in the same ward who wouldn't be treated by "foreigners". She really was obnoxious towards some of the staff and it must have taken every ounce of professionalism not to retaliate.

One hospital near me in Wales is so ancient and antiquated I'm surprised it hasn't fallen down yet. Even a refurbishment would be good.
But then again, perhaps those really old buildings were built to last, unlike the rubbish that was built in the 1960s.

However, there always seem to be more than adequate staff at the clinics - perhaps that is preferable to working on the wards.

I've just checked - it was built in the mid 1800s.

We do need to fund nursing training again.

The Tories have closed 66 maternity and A&E wards since they came to power. The opposite of what they promised voters.
