Having worked with children who as young as six already had established and prejudiced views about the racial origins of others I would say that actually the fact that your children didn't discriminate is entirely irrelevant. Just as the education we provided was there to counter the negative attitude these children. had already absorbed at home towards other races the teaching of alternative lifestyles is necessary if we are to ever have true equality for LGBQT people. It isn't a matter of teaching children what happens in the bedroom it is a matter of teaching children through stories and discussion that people sometimes have different families to their own and they are just as valuable.
(By the way Annie teachers have been educationg children about race, ethnic origin, travellers, people with disabilities and accepting everyone regardlless of appearance since the 1980s)
In my opinion such education should start in nurseries.

Unless they have been influenced / encouraged not to be by the prejudices of the adults who are responsible for them.

Beckett I think you are missing the point. I too think that little children are very accepting of most things and are unlikely to be fazed by, or unduly interested in, the make up of a classmate's family or any other issue that adults might have negative views about.

However, if children are taught at home that certain people and their ways of living are undesirable and possibly vile and sinful, they will carry that idea with them into public life. It is not an imaginary problem but a real one. The recent television series about British Asian (primarily Muslim) and British white children swapping schools, demonstrated quite clearly the sorts of prejudices (on both "sides") that were already very apparent. They were older children, but this distrust would have been built up over childhood.

Obviously too difficult for those of the far left who believe anyone who disagrees with them are lesser human beings.

Iam64 I agree with you that responding to posts with unpleasant comments is not a good idea. However, the comment of Bridget which preceded it -

"You can’t beat good old common sense, sadly it seems to be a disappearing attribute"

- was arrogant and dismissive - implying that the comments made by anyone who disagrees with her and anniebach are lacking in substance and not to be taken seriously.

I suppose it is best to ignore such provocative remarks but sometimes it's difficult.

Beckett, it was the same with my daughters, this town has always been a military town, my daughters went to school with children from Napal, St.Kitts, Wales and England, never a reference to nationality, younger daughter’s close friend lived with her mother and her mothers partner, a woman, never a question.

That's true, Beckett. I had a good friend at secondary school, we shared a lot of things. Not long ago when looking at old school photos it dawned on me that she was definitely mixed race. As far as I remember no-one had ever commented on this.

I think children just accept things as they are - is there any need to point out "differences". I recall waiting with a friend who was picking up her GD from school. The little girl run up to us excited that she had made a new friend. We asked what the new friend was like - she went into an explanation of how tall she was, the colour of her hair, what she was wearing etc.etc. The new friend then arrived - she was black, something my friends GD had not mentioned because in her mind it wasn't important.

As they get older I think children notice differences but if adults don't make a big thing of them then children won't.

My thoughts actually applied only to Bridgeit's post Iam and was for the very reason you pointed out in your post. This teaching is not sex education. However, its has been said so many times now that I really doubt that those who are determined to see it that way will change their tune. Thankfully, we have patient, superior human beings who are prepared to treat elderly adults like children and keep repeating the truth in the hope that they understand.

I have just been listening to Javid, who was apparently the only minister not to be invited to the state banquet. The implication being because he is Muslim and his remarks defending himself and other Muslims over Trumps racist rhetoric.

I don't agree with Brideit's support of Anniebach's post at 17.59. It isn't about sex education, its about helping children understand that families and communities are different and that one size doesn't fit all. The people who care enough to teach that would certainly ensure no one is seen at an outsider, including people from the travelling community, people with disabilities etc.

GGMk3's response to disagreeing with Bridgeit and Anniebach is to make what I see as an unnecessarily personal and unpleasant comment in response. It's only my personal view but I find polarisation tends to close down, rather than expand debates .

Doesn't that suggest that you may be one of the ones who are out of step with what comprises common sense then Bridgeit? I now have a picture of you, sat in the home, thinking everyone's wrong but you. It's very sad when people become deluded.

ginger hair , it’s all realy the sex lives of parents. What 4 year

Eloethan, yes what you say is correct. Children are not being given 'sex education', the No Outsider books simply talk about respect for others, whose lifestyle, the way they look, the people they live with, may be different than your own.
This thread s about anti semitism but as ever, discussions wander into areas that are linked in some way.
The lessons are about kindness and acceptance. The group of Muslim activists are causing such distress to the staff, parents and children at the school. There is much misinformation about this issue.
