It's the toughest time in post war politics brought about by the silly public school boys who then skulked away in their own privileged cocooned corners.

A big pat on the back to Mrs May for being brave enough to give it a go. She has been hard working, stoic and tried battling against the European democraphic and the back stabbing of her own party.

The whole trial and tribulations of this brexit process, bar none, has highlighted what a self seeking, self gratifying bunch many politicians are. Shame on the lot of you!

It will probably be the buffoon's time now, no doubt. A word of advice...knuckle down and work hard. Cut the school boy silliness, the lies and the dithering. Sort this whole sorry mess, once and for all.

I think Theresa tried her very best under the circumstances and should be applauded not reviled. Originally she wasn't in favour of Brexit (horrible word!) but, once in power, she has soldiered on regardless, to carry out the wishes of the (albeit tiny) majority. The level of self-interest in getting rid of her among Conservative MPs who want her job is breath-taking! I wonder if they would all have been so anti-Theresa if she had been a man from one of the major public schools instead of a woman from a state school. Talk about bias and prejudice. I'm appalled! I hope Philip takes her away on a long long trip, far away from Europe, where she can recover and put this behind her. I will never vote Conservative again after they have showed their true colours!

I’m not a traditional Tory voter and I strongly support staying within the EU but I think Theresa May behaved impeccably and those that wouldn’t consider any compromise will have worse to come after her resignation. She worked tirelessly for this country and should be applauded for that. I don’t think the end result was a failure on her part. Sorry to see her go.

I understand the sympathy for a woman who faces failure and the loss of her dignity as well as of her job. BUT Theresa May's actions as Home Secretary, and her lack of action while PM to solve the dreadful problems faced by so many people in this country, caused heartbreak to thousands. She was a poor PM, who allowed the process of 'Brexit' to dominate government to the exclusion of all else.
Her loyalty has always been to the Conservative Party, a tiny number of people compared to the electorate itself, and it is their treatment of her which has broken her heart (if there really is one to break).

I wish that Teresa May could read this thread - so many people saying the same thing - that she did her best in such difficult circumstances and now wishing her well.

The majority voted to leave the EUIt was nev, and were presented with a remainer as Pnever going to end well.

Anyone taking over from David Cameron after he b***** off after had a poisoned challice and was bound to fail.
78ish% of those who voted in the referendum voted out, unfortunately this doesn't count, only costituency result count.
Should there be another referendum, it should only be by votes counted and MPs should not have a say.
The country said NO, MPs should honour this.

I feel sorry for her up to a point, but only as far as Brexit is concerned, she probably tried her best
A lot of people have been made poorer, while her and the rest of the MPs have had wage rises and lived in luxury, while others have suffered,so i and lots of others are glad she is gone, she is the worst PM ever,apart from David Cameron, she didn;t help all the people suffering with the Universal credit fiasco, and all the new poverty, food banks etc, homelessness and deaths through lack of money and not being able to afford to live a decent life, post offices closed, less police ,fire stations closed down etc

TM has a long record of being stubborn, unwilling to compromise and only see one way, her way.

Not only in her present position as PM, but also in the Home Office where she was responsible for the Windrush Debacle and the shredding of the boarding cards., also as Women's Minister.

Even before entering Politics she was responsible for creating a hostile environment within The Bank of England and the other Financial Institutions she worked in, she continued operating this hostile environment throughout her lack lustre career.

After Boris ran awy from the job and cameron declined as he didn't believe in Brexit and his gamble to get the whole issue off the table failed, most people were relieved for the steadying hand of TM. But she gave too much power to the far right of her party to make up for the fact that they called her a remainer. She triggered article 50 far too early before any consensus of what kind of deal we were after was considered. She carried on with her hard Brexit stance. Her calling an election and losing her majority another failing, I probably do think she was doing it all for 'her party' but it consumed her in the end and spat her out. Our only hope is for Rory Stuart to become leader. Will he even be in the final two? The rest are leading us over the cliff.
The most positive outcome is that this will be the breaking of the first past the post system and the rising of the Greens so they better get their big act together. It will also give rise to the far right as well but it will all be more transparent, at the moment the two big parties encompass a wide span of ideologies from extreme Left to extreme Right its time people nailed their honest beliefs to the mast so we knew what we are voting for and give us more than one vote.
But the final point is the way they treat women, the patronising attitude. It said it all when David Davies said yesterday Of TM 'She is a very good lady' you just want to punch him. Even Trump said she was a good woman.

If Theresa May had received the backing of her jealous ministers we wouldn’t be in this mess now. I’m sure she was treated so badly because she is a strong woman and the men, in particular don’t like it. Sadly she didn’t get a chance to deal with other PM matters. Let’s see how the next one is treated.

I totally agree with you Conegirl too. I have felt sorry for her for a long time now and she did do her best. I hope she gets some well earned rest now as all this has definitely taken its toll on her.

Absolutely agree. You only have to look at her to see the toll this has taken on her health. I wish her and Philip every happiness.

I so agree with you, she has an inner integrity that puts most of parliament and the press to shame.

I wonder what the Queen thinks of it all. She has the most experience of politicians of all hues over decades. Perhaps she'll confer one of her own honours on Theresa. That would say something. (Hint hint Your Majesty if you're reading this!)

She doesn't have any family, or friends. Not according to most of the profiles of her that I've read.

I think she did the best she could under very trying times. I hope she retires now and enjoys time with family and friends. I suspect she won't, her life has been so hectic and involved she may find it hard doing nothing after a spell of rest and relaxation.

I agree May did her best, but only within her limited capability. She is not blessed with either much imagination or that much required ability by politians of ensuring a base of supporters. She never cultivated that and thus her downfall was always assured given the circumstances.

May was never going to be an outstanding PM, in my opinion, she would have made a good hard working civil servant.

She was treated shamefully by her party. But the whole country has been treated more shamefully by most Mps (of any party) for a long time now. The burden of Austerity being allowed to fall disproportionately on the poor. Lack of integrity. Broken promises. Government waste. Individual ambition and greed before the good of the country. The world is now talking about the UK being a 'broken democracy' and not just because of Brexit.
As for TM, I think her attempts to handle getting a deal on Brexit, were no worse than anyone else would have managed. But some of her earlier decisions I very much disliked.

I agree with you Gonegirl. I didn't agree with most of her policies but I don't doubt that she was a woman of integrity ...a character trait getting rarer and rarer in our politicians.
Brexit was poisoned chalice from day one. I think her most unfortunate mistake was to go to the country when she already had a working majority. A bit of arrogance there ...or bad advisors ...but it left her hopelessly vunerable and unable to push anything through.

But who could we get in her place?

Boris? His one notable act was to buy water cannon from Germany to use against British protesters in London. A plan which was knocked back by Teresa May when she was Home Secretary. His other memorable antic was to find himself trapped midway on some kind of trip wire. We don't want a clown representing us as Prime Minister. We're already the laughing stock of Europe. He only chose to support exiting Europe because Cameron was for staying in. He had to take the opposite stance if he was to try to succeed Cameron as PM. No -one was more surprised than him when it came off and although he was the leading light of the Brexit campaign he had no clue how to action it once the vote was in. Totally career driven with doubtful integrity. I wouldn't trust him to run a fish and chip shop.

I didn't vote for Brexit but Teresa May recognised that in a democracy the government has to deliver what the majority thinks it wants. Yes a small majority but what else could she do ...with integrity ...but try to deliver it.

Good luck Theresa May. Your politics are not mine but you did your best and you were stabbed in the back again and again by your own party. I can't see anyone, on either side of the House, who could have done better.

I agree too. She seems to have worked tirelessly, she has health issues too. She deserves to retire now and have a well earned rest.

As an aside, I met T M just before Easter on Cader Idris in Snowdonia. She was out walking with her DH and two body guards. I had a very brief exchange with her but no mention of the B word!!
