Recreational Drug use fueling knife crime

I believe Cressida Dick was on Nick Ferrari's radio programme this morning to discuss the escalation in knife crime, although I didn't actually hear it. Not discounting the fact that we clearly need more police to deal with these horrendous crimes, I can't help agreeing with her point that middle class recreational drug users have blood on their hands and are fueling the escalation of knife crime and the highly pernicious and worrying problem of "county lines", where a staggering number of youngsters are being recruited as drug mules to transport drugs into rural areas.

I have heard, like the Rotheram girls before them, when these young people are admitted to hospital with stab wounds there is very little help offered in helping them extricate themselves from the situation they have become involved in, some of them are very young indeed. Not only should something be done about that but I would also like to see a campaign aimed at recreational drug users, (those who do it for fun, from festival goes to dinner party guests) to raise their awareness that they are complicit in the violence that is being inflicted on an awful lot of hapless victims just to facilitate their selfish recreational habit.

I have extensive knowledge unfortunately of the effects of cannabis and alcohol on young brains through my experience with late AC. Alcohol and cannabis seem so often to be regarded as "acceptable and low risk" compared to heroin etc.
My experience and all the research I did as a result revealed a terrifying gap between many people's perceptions and the truth. My son lost his morals and although he was never involved in knife crime, he inflicted some terrible violence while under the influence of these so called "safer" substances.

I would never class alcohol as low risk.
Hateful stuff in the wrong hands, every bit as much as hard drugs.

Every time I look at the news there's been another death from stabbing and it fills me with dread each time. Another young man lost his life today in East London. What is happening and how on earth can it be brought under control? Even with increased numbers of police recruited, they can't be everywhere. What can the police do?

Is the answer more police on the beat or more severe sentences for being caught carrying a knife and long prison sentences for those convicted of murder?

It's alarming that we're now in an emergency situation and makes you anxious for young people just going out with friends.
