I don't think I said in my post other countries in the EU are suffering from racial tension 'because of Schengen'. I am perfectly aware we are one the countries not signed up to the Schengen Agreement , neither did I say it was a reason for Brexit. Having said that why do you think so many EU countries now have Border Controls in place??

I was responding to 2 separate points raised in previous posts. 1_ Border Control 2 Racism. I might accept that there is a possible link between the two but that is not being disingenuous in my book. I could be accused of being disingenuous if I had said only EU countries feel the need of border controls and are seeing racial tension but I accept the UK is going to require more Border Control and like other EU countries there are signs of racial tension. What I try not do and what is disingenuous to me is make such problems a sole problem for the UK as others time and time again do.

Another point in question re Border Controls/Visas/ Who pays I don't agree with another posters statement.

"It should not be the tax payers who pay for the border guards. After all, not all tax payers use the borders".

If that is the criteria for how tax is spent then my neighbours who never had children should get a refund for paying towards other peoples children to be educated.

Of course we should question why racist abuse happens in this country and any other for that matter; it's terrible but sadly it's nothing new. I don't remember it personally but in the 50's, migrant workers coming here for the sole purpose of earning a living when looking for accommodation, were met with 'no blacks', 'no Irish'.

It isn't happening now because of BREXIT. Perhaps it's being reported more because of BREXIT and if so, that's also wrong.

As to why BREXIT happened, the short answer is because the majority of those who voted wanted it to happen. It's still far to early to know what the effects on our country will be, but one thing we do know is that we are so far, doing a lot better than the fear campaign anticipated.

Jalima as each country in the EU has vote it really won't matter that much whether the UK is present at the meetings or not as they will easily be outvoted on any point at all. Probably quicker just not to have them there. Don't really see how that is u democratic as they will all have a vote.

Has anyone read Nick Clegg's two pieces about the UK making new trade deals outside of the EU? I never thought too much of him but he is a bit of a dark horse on the EU - he did work in Brussels for a few years I believe and so has great insight. In these pieces he just states the legalities which will face the UK and why there cannot be any quick treaty with countries outside the EU.

The day after we actually leave - whenever that is - there will be an immediate 10% duty on cars, 21% on beer and spirits and something like 30% on chocolate - those figure may be slightly out - didn't write them down. I have no reason to think Clegg is giving false information so it is amazing with these facts that people such as Boris and David D think things will be easy to do.

You're right, Ww, Clegg is one of the few politicians who has direct experience of negotiating trade deals. I doubt if he will stand again as an MP in 2020 and it wouldn't surprise me if he goes before then. He'll step straight into a role as a negotiator of some sort.

I was trying to point out to MargaretX that Yorkshire is not entirely the seventh circle of Hell she makes out and she is rather over-reacting to say she would never visit here, terrified as she is of being abused for being a Brit living in Germany .

But oh look, someone's been assaulted in Leeds. And that never happens anywhere else in the world. Proof positive that she is absolutely right. I stand corrected.

Well, my son will be living in Leeds for the next three years and I don't feel that nervous. However, I do feel there's more xenophobic tension than there has been in the past.

I think the problem is that the EU will charge British chocolate makers high tariffs. Currently, the rate is 30% for chocolate manufactured outside the EU, so it will become more expensive to export British-made chocolate.

Welshwife I was just pointing out one of the reasons why my friends voted to leave; your explanation about the EU voting in your first paragraph would reinforce their views most strongly!

My son went to Leeds and that's where he met my DiL DD it's a great student city, and I do agree with your last sentence about xenophobic tension.

Lindt, Milka and other Belgian chocolate makers goods would all be subject to import tax and UK made chocolates etc would be taxed when they were exported - everything would cost more -foodstuffs would also have a rate if tax - the same as imposed now on non-EU goods - not sure if it was Clegg but one article I read suggested the leaving will cause family expenditure to rise by about 8%. I realised reading his articles that the whole thing will be a complete nightmare to deal with.

Has anybody seen any sensible reason as to why Boris and his mates have formed a pressure group and are so eager to have TM trigger the start button? They seem to be behaving like a bunch of very young children who only know two time zones - now and not now!

This is not to trigger article 50 sooner WW but a cross-party campaign created by pro-Brexit politicians aimed at pressuring Theresa May into fully delivering on the promise that Britain will leave the EU.

She seems to be reneging on some of her 'Brexit will mean Brexit' promises.

Ah - the report I read mentioned them wanting the trigger pressed now.

A pregnant woman lost her baby after being kicked in the stomach in a “devastating” racist attack.

The woman, 34 , was shopping in a Co-op near Milton Keynes when a man launched a tirade of racist abuse at her.

He then followed her to her car before kicking her hard in the stomach. She collapsed in agony and had to be rushed to hospital, where she was told her baby could not be saved.

A 40-year-old man had a bottle and a bag of ice smashed against his head when he tried to intervene.

The victims were taken to Milton Keynes General Hospital. They have both since been discharged.

Thames Valley Police has issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the attack on Water Eaton Road, Bletchley.

PC Richard Armitage said: “This racially aggravated assault had absolutely devastating consequences for the victim, who lost her baby as a result of the attack.

"Our thoughts are with her and her family at this incredibly difficult and sad time.

“A thorough investigation is underway and we would like to speak to the man pictured as he may have information which could help with the investigation.

“If you recognise the man in the CCTV image or have any information about this incident please contact me via the Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101."

I read things like this and I am appalled and extremely worried. And yet, on this forum, when I voice my concerns all I get from some people are sneering comments. I find it very sad; even though it means that some people will have to look for their amusement elsewhere I guess it's best that I avoid these threads from now on.

Tegan you are not the only one reading these reports and being both horrified and worried. We are visiting UK in a couple of weeks and have French number plates which also incorporate the EU flag - last year when we visited we had the car keyed all along one side - this of course may have had nothing to do with the number plates but we looked at neighbouring cars which were fine - so I am a tad worried about the trip - but not about the visits we intend to make to either North Yorks or Exeter but when we go to the area in which we used to live!

The events you posted are truly shocking and horrible Tegan.

However, I haven't noticed people sneering on this thread and I was merely trying to get things in perspective.

Believe me, I have been shocked for many, many years over what one human being can do to another, daily factual stories as part of my job, not from the headlines.

Back again on this thread. I am NOT nervous of being abused when visiting Britain. Its just that when I'm there we do meet other people and I can't imagine not being able to discuss the Eu with those people because my friend has said she was the only one for remain and is surrounded by Brexit voters.

We will meet up here sometime. This Brexit referendum has altered Britain and not for the better.

MargaretX What is stopping you from discussing the referendum with people who voted out. Give it a go, you might learn something ( from the horses mouth) instead of from GN and the media. They don't bite, you know.

Is GN not from the horse's mouth? Everybody on GN had a vote, and some of them voted out.
