I am so saddened by this news. Robin Williams was 63 and and 'it is being reported' he has committed suicide.

I think he was one of the best actors and a very fuuny man.

I always consider Good Morning Vietnam and the Fisher King as two of his best films.

Such a tragedy, he was so versatile and I should imagine loved by many people and many will be genuinely shocked and I think he will be greatly missed.

When watching him in interviews it seemed he felt he always had to be "on", making jokes and playing the fool (which he did very well). I heard an extract of an interview with him on radio this morning and he was even joking about his drug addiction.

I loved him in the movie "Mrs Doubtfire", marvellous performance!

It is sad he has gone!

A very sad day RIP Robin you will be missed by millions.

So sad to hear about the death of Robin Williams, a really funny man sometimes bordering on slightly manic.

I took my children to see a lot of his child oriented films when they were young such as Hook, Jumunji and Mrs Doubtfire. He was a very funny and off the wall interviewee, one of his lines that has always stuck in my mind when guesting on Michael Parkinson and musing about pandas' seeming inability to mate, he said something along the lines of when the male is put in with the female he probably thinks to himself "just don't fancy that panda bitch!"

He will be missed by many.

I'm not sad about the death of Robin Williams, but am feeling somber and thoughtful about the unhappiness he experienced throughout much of his life.

I feel the same about a young man, Brett Robertshaw, who committed suicide on 5th July that I've just read about in the DM. An ordinary lad who loved music, was funny and kind.

What saddens me is the commonality they shared.

How exciting for you Joan, what a generous minded other half you have.
DH and I at the early stages of planning our first proper holiday for years. There are so many interesting and beautiful places out there, including plenty in UK that I haven't been to.

DD1 and her husband save all their £2 coins from one year to the next for their holiday with us. They are very single minded about it and say they don't really miss it at the time. This year's haul is £750.

Sorry wrong thread blush

Grannyknot Tue 12-Aug-14 14:50:12

dusty Robin Williams would have laughed out loud flowers

Mishap Tue 12-Aug-14 14:53:01

The three Ds - drugs, drink and depression - seem to dog the acting and pop music field. It is very sad.

dustyangel Tue 12-Aug-14 15:19:43

Yes GrannyK, it's a nice way to think of him, isn't it?

granjura Tue 12-Aug-14 17:09:30

Yes, comedians are so often riddled with manic depression and other addictions- seems par for the course. I was very shocked to hear from my New York cousin that he was the most difficult man to work for, and was a terrible lecherer- as she worked with him on several of his films as a costumière.

Nonu Tue 12-Aug-14 17:20:01

Oh Granjura , let him get cold before we tell TALES.

PLS.

Nonu Tue 12-Aug-14 17:21:46

He bought immense pleasure to many people .

hmm

HollyDaze Tue 12-Aug-14 17:31:43

When I heard this on the news this morning, I felt saddened.

I agree with Iam64 - it does seem to affect comedians a lot and I've always felt that making people laugh must be the hardest thing to do.

I'm sure he knew how much people admired him and appreciated the laughs and chuckles he gave them and, ironically, would have helped lift people's mood; not a bad epitaph really is it.

papaoscar Tue 12-Aug-14 17:46:32

A sad loss. Despite all his success he appeared to have had a very sad private life, and maybe was not the easiest person to get on with, like many other comedians. RIP.

granjura Tue 12-Aug-14 18:20:38

Nonu, I'm sorry if this has offended- but not TALE I'm afraid- I do trust my cousin totally. I would delete if I could, but I can't.

Ana Tue 12-Aug-14 18:21:43

You can report your own post, granjura, and ask for it to be deleted.

Important to remember that this kind of depression is an illness. Just because other people can't see it doesn't make it any less corrosive than, say, cancer. People suffering from depression are often more helpless in the face of this illness than cancer sufferers. And before I get slammed for this, I am a cancer survivor!

Iam64 Tue 12-Aug-14 18:34:37

I wouldn't slam you for that comment Judthepud2. I have been fortunate in avoiding cancer so far, but I do have auto immune conditions that are invisible so I empathise with others with similarly 'invisible' health problems, physical and/or mental. I feel sad for Robin Williams, he must have struggled so hard, for so long. Addictions/anxiety/depression go hand in hand - it's the old which comes first conundrum isn't it.

suebailey1 Tue 12-Aug-14 18:37:02

Its very sad news indeed- there seems to be a darker side to many of our finest comedy talents. Poor man so tormented. RIP flowers

dorsetpennt Wed 13-Aug-14 09:37:36

I think he was either bi-polar or a manic depressive. I was very fortunate to see him at the Comedy Store in New York in 1979. He was the headline act He was so frenetic in his delivery, although extremely funny it was almost exhausting being there. He was also on Saturday Night Live and again frenetic but funny.
My favourite films of him were Good Morning Vietnam and The Dead Poets Society.
So sad but not surprising he would go this way. He had had a severe addiction to cocaine in the 1980s and had been in and out of ReHab .

whenim64 Wed 13-Aug-14 09:53:32

Cocaine does terrible things to mental health. If he wasn't depressed or psychotic when he started, the years of drug and alcohol addiction would have messed up his head. He did make me laugh with his quip about taking cocaine to calm himself down. He had a fast and witty intellect - such a shame he hadn't found a way to express it without constantly relapsing into substance abuse.

I've been struck by how his suicide has affected the younger members of my extended family. It seems he had quite a cult following in young people who have seen a lot of his performances on YouTube.

Grannyknot Wed 13-Aug-14 10:02:20

Some of his quips about addiction problems were also some of his funniest:

"Cocaine is God's way of telling you you have too much money".

"Alcoholic black-outs is witness protection for the conscience".

Definitely dabbling in drugs with or without it leading to addiction can cause crushing depression later on.

whenim64 Wed 13-Aug-14 10:11:57

Thanks for those, Grannyknot. I hope his funeral celebrates the funny take he had on life. His family and friends are devastated and clearly loved him without exception, so will forgive him.

Nonu Wed 13-Aug-14 10:49:28

Why are there two threads on Robin Williams??

Just asking!
