.... and a known recidivist! Open prison simply a stupid idea, but part of the processing of prisoners, I suppose.

He had 13 life sentences for serious crimes of a nature that could have killed and have lasting problems for those he attacked. Why was he given such a short amount of prison time? He is a danger to society.

Max Clifford was given 8 'consequative' sentences.

I am not saying Clifford's sentence was right or wrong but the use of 'consequative' sentencing is used as rare as the proverbial rocking horse ----

I understand the open prison system but time after time we hear of it being abused.

I think if we were informed 'every time' a prisoner has absconded from an open prison we would be shocked to know the truth. Even more so if we were told how many commit a crime, some of a serious nature, whilst they are either an absconder or on day release.

The fact is he was out on temporary licence and failed to return, so he didn't actually abscond from the prison itself. The question is, why was he allowed out at all?

It was said on the news last night that open prison and then day release are the normal procedures to prepare someone for release into society.
When it comes to perpetrators of this nature, this procedure is a farce !

I was however pointing out the open prison system can be a danger. It must be reviewed and has required doing so for years.

I wasn't accusing anyone of anything, just pointing out that he didn't actually walk out of the prison grounds or anything. I don't know why he was out on licence, but if he's so dangerous, why was this allowed?

GNs, Michael Wheatly, as you probably all know turned up in Twickenham last night, which is a couple of miles from where I live. I have just come back from taking my granddaughter to a park very near where I live and was talking to a mum with her little boy when we noticed a police helicopter hovering overhead, the woman I was talking to said they are looking for Michael Wheatly. Have just heard he has robbed a Post Office in Sunbury also a couple of miles away.

I cannot believe that they ever let him in an open prison given the nature of his crimes. I would suggest any criminal profiler could have predicted his dangerousness and the likelihood him repeating his offences. It's the sort of mistakes that is made with those men who seriously abuse partners, are then released and go back to kill.

Well - he has proved that he will re-offend, so they should bang him up for life - he does after all have 13 life sentences.

On the surface it does seem odd that he was already in an open prison and obviously on some programme to prepare him for release. I am sure there will be lengthy investigations into the assessment that got him to this stage. Good job he has been apprehended without major harm to others.Well done to the police and to whoever 'told' where he was!

Non violent fraudsters. Crime against property/finance often get what appear to be comparatively harsher sentences than crimes against the person. Perhaps fraudsters are easier prisoners to manage.

I am not being rude but I don't understand your post with relation to Wheatley and what his crimes were.

I hope he will be given realistic prison time this time around. I doubt if he will be in an open prison for a while.
