Teaching is much harder than most people realise if they haven't been a teacher themselves [or know one]. But the police see and deal with things [quite often when they've not long been doing the job] that would affect a lot of people for the rest of their lives, and they deal with such events on a regular basis. However, someone I know was attacked by a group of youths in the early hours of the morning and it was quite a while before the police arrived [and then didn't admit how long it had taken them]. Social workers probably deal with pretty awful things as well and I'm sure their pay isn't anywhere near as much as either teachers or police.
