On Monday 23 April 2012 Panorama showed a shocking exposé of one woman's experience in a care home for older people.
Subsequently five workers were sacked and one of them, a nurse, was convicted for assault and ill treatment and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment.
The national charity The Relatives & Residents Association worked closely with the daughter of the woman in the programme and saw the devastating impact these awful events had on both the victim and her family.
The Relatives & Residents Association believes that one way to improve care for older people, and stamp out abuse, is to have a powerful regulator which makes sure that care homes are inspected regularly. They also feel that inspectors should thoroughly scrutinize for tell-tale signs of good and bad practice and listen to individual complaints – something the charity does not believe is currently happening.
The charity wants to see immediate changes to the way the regulator is run and has set up an online petition. If If they manage to secure 100,000 signatures it may be considered for debate in the House of Commons. Please help them to reach their target by clicking on the link below.
