Lasting Power of Attorney

I have a POA for an aunt. She set it up through a solicitor.
, I share it with my daughter.. Everything we do has to be signed by both of us.
My son in Law and his brother are attorneys for their mother, but can act independently.
I think the cost to my aunt ,about 4 years ago was £600.

I am the only Attorney.
What I would like to know is how to get a paper copy of the POA.

If you do it on the gov.uk site it only costs about £85 for each of the two parts. If you are on certain benefits it is free.

You do it all online and the instructions are very clear. Your parents need to have a witness to the signatures.

Once the forms are completed you are sent the papers which are all punched through at the bottom confirming they are the legal documents. I photocopied ours too.

Mell967 it depends who is asking for the copy. In my experience some banks are happy if you take the original and they photocopy it. Otherwise you probably need a "certified copy" where somebody like a solicitor has to sign each page of the copy certifying it is correct
I suggest you ask whoever needs it exactly what they will accept.

That's a mystery! Once whoever completes the application it is processed and they are sent a paper copy. There should also be paperwork confirming it has been registered. It does take months for the process to be completed.
If the copy has gone missing I think you should contact the Office of the Public Guardian armed with as much information about the application that you can find and ask how to proceed.

The official POA document runs to around 20 pages, as I said each page is punched at the bottom to show it is the original document.

Why don’t you ring the Office of The Public Guardian ? 0300 456 0300 you can also email.

Just a thought, if your parents used a solicitor to make the application might they have asked the solicitor to keep the documents?

They did use a Solicitor, so you may well be right.
I have the paperwork to say that POAs have been registered, but that’s it.

Mell967 if I remember correctly you would have been notified that the POAs had been registered because you are the Attorney. The stamped applications would have been returned to your parents - plus letters notifying them of the registration.
Most donors keep the paperwork themselves but if this solicitor is storing their wills they could have decided to store the POA's at the same place.

you should have been sent a paper copy when you set the POA up. If not if you email their office they should send another one out to you.

Now all sorted.
The POAs were with my parents Solicitor.
I now have certified copies of them.

I think you should contact the Office Of The Public Guardian. They are very helpful and will be able to answer all your queries.

I think there was a section asking who gets the actual document.
Some people have it sent to the proposer and some to the recipient of the powers.

I expect your parents have it... but I think

Oh yeah, I’ve heard really good things about The Adcox Firm PLLC. A friend of mine used them and said they were super helpful and professional. They’ve got offices in Austin and Nashville too, so they’re pretty easy to reach.

Possibly not so easy for the vast majority of Gransnetters, who are largely UK based!

It’s easy enough to do it yourself.
It costs £98 per POA .

If you need to show proof of a PoA, eg to a bank, you can generate an access code for them to see it online.

(This doesn't apply for a PoA that was set up before 2016).

You (and your parents) should each have been given copies at the time. If it was set up by your parents solicitor, they may have a copy. Wherever your parents Wills are kept/stored,, you may find the POA in the same place.

Ii should have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian so contact them for help.
