Do you know how much is in your purse/wallet?

DH and I don't use cash much these days. Getting car park change or pound coins for our SN to to take to his day centre for refreshments is a pain as we have no nearby bank any more. Its a visit to the atm and then deliberate shopping with the notes from that to hopefully get the change we need.
DH used to empty his change from his pockets every day but since wfh and now retirement that doesn't happen!

I have a very precise idea both of what is actually in my purse and in my wallet, what DH has in his, and what is in both our current accounts that we withdraw housekeeping money from or draw on when we pay by Visa card.

I also know what is in the account direct debits are paid from each month and keep a budget file on my computer of the utility bills, dentist's, optician's, vet's and chiropractor's expenses for the entire year.

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night without the security of knowing precisely where we stand money-wise.

No cash for me either, I just use cards now.
If I need cash for a newspaper or something where they won't take cards I just frisk my long-suffering husband who likes to carry a wallet full of cash and won't use internet banking.

I would buy food and a drink for a homeless person with my card but I would never give them cash even if I had any!

I usually know the value in notes and a rough idea of coins. Always have £1 coins for trolley and the fee for craft club and 50p for tea at choir.

We should keep using cash where possible. Otherwise we are going to lose it forever.

Only ever use cash. I take £50 out every Monday and whatever is left on a Sunday night goes into various tins. I know i have £27 and a few pence in there.

Less than £5. Unfortunately cash will “die out” it’s just a question of “when”.

Just a few coins in my purse.

I mainly use my card.

My shoulder bag is a lot lighter now.

Germanshepherdsmum, yes James with Bob the cat was genuine, and I am sure some of the people asking for cash on the street are genuine too - I give occasionally. There was a bloke in London who came up and asked me for money and we had a chat - he was so amusing that I gave him £1. I use cash at the car boots I go to.....I give my grandchildren cash..... my local park has a s/h book stall and I pay cash there. I'd hate it if we became a cash-free society.

I have a £10 note for "emergencies" and a few coins in a separate coin purse, but other than that just use my debit card.

A couple of hundred pounds. I am housebound so all my shopping is on line. The window cleaner is the only person to whom I pay cash. My helps I pay by cheque.

A fiver for my window cleaner, otherwise I use my contactless card. I offer to buy homeless people food. The Big Issue seller takes cards, as do our small market stall holders. Yes, they have to pay for them but all have said that they do so much more business than before they had card machines, so they are quids in.

I realised the other day when I saw a man selling the Big Issue that I had no cash to give him so now I make sure to have some coins in my purse. For everything it’s a card.

i think most big issue sellers use card payments.

If you pay a Big Issue seller by card, welbeck, the card company will deduct an admin fee from the payment.

I realised the other day when I saw a man selling the Big Issue that I had no cash to give him so now I make sure to have some coins in my purse. For everything it’s a card.

In the past three weeks I've paid for a term's subs for two groups I belong to with cash, put £10 notes into the charity collecting boxes at two funerals and gave money to a friend who was buying something I needed from a shop some distance away.
So yes, I use cash. Use it or it will disappear from circulation.

The window cleaner and another tradesman gave invoices and were paid by BACS.

I always know what I have in my purse and bank account. I prefer to have cash to use on market and local shops and in any case up in the dales the internet does not work and you need to use cash. In any case I want cash to keep being used. Have no problem with using card if people want to but there are some who do not have a bank account for whatever reason. I think public places like restaurants and shops may have the right to say they prefer cards b ut they should not be allowed to ban cash. It is coin of the realm and there will be no fraud as yo give them the correct amount, not try to con your way through things. I am prepared to use a card with companys I know and trust but in a new - to me - shop or a place I have never visited I prefer to keep my bank details to my self and use cash. Also as my son found out it is very easy to just have the odd coffee etc on the card and then find yourself spending more than 20 without realizing it.

Our window cleaner wouldn't even drive over for a fiver. Granted only exteriors are cleaned, I don't have to be round, but a fiver? No.

And if he pays basic rate tax and declares the £5 it becomes £4, ignoring NI. So how likely is it that he declares his earnings?

Norah, I only have one window I can't reach so when he's cleaning the shop's window beneath my flat he does my lone window. He charges £3.50 but I won't pay that little.

GSM he's a Jehovah Witness I have known since my children were little and I would bet everything I own that he is honest.
