Ironing

I am an ironer, always have been. I find it quite relaxing with the tv, music or radio in the background. Probably only an hour a week these days. I just have to iron clothes and sheets, can’t stand crumpled things. I just bought a new ironing board cover with flowers on, worth every penny.
Any more ironing club members out there ?

I'm with you, nanna8. I like to wear ironed clothes, and sleep in ironed bedlinen.
Looking at a pile of ironed items is very satisfying.

Years ago, I never used to iron. DH worked away and with his and the DD’s shirts, I was looking at 30 shirts per week, plus 4 lots of bedding. Washing it all wasn’t a problem, but I found a local company which would come and collect the items and return them a couple of days later, ironed, on hangers and in plastic bags, which we recycled week after week.
Now, I don’t mind ironing my few bits and I actually enjoy ironing DGS2’s stuff.

I must order DH a nicer ironing board cover after seeing yours, nanna8 🙂

Remembering the mounds of ironing I used to get through when the children were at school makes me wonder how I ever coped. Work shirts, school shirts etc. Plus all the bedding etc. Yes, I ironed everything (except socks and towels).

My daughters don't like ironing, one pays someone to do hers.

A friend of mine came back from a holiday in an Airbnb swearing to give them a lamentable reviews. I thought the toilet must have backed up and flooded the entire place and the host did nothing about it, or the property was situated on the local tip. But no. It was because there was no working iron, the iron supplied was dead as a dodo. Goodness knows why anyone would want to iron on holiday. But then I gave up ironing ages ago.

I have a travel iron 😁

I still iron the pillow cases but that's about it bed wise. I also run the iron over tshirts that look too crumpled but now I tend to just fold and put away.
My DD and DS just fold and put away.

I threw my iron away years ago. My lovely elderly, next door neighbour showed me how to smooth and fold washing straight from the line. It was many years ago and I still think of her every time I take in my washing.

One thing I can deduce is that none of those who don't iron or possess one are also non-sewers. Anyone who sews, whether clothes or other items knows you have to press seams as you go for a professional finish. How anyone manages to peg out washing without getting peg marks on some items is beyond me and I have bought so called (expensive) non-marking pegs!

Linen is tricky, because it does crease badly. But if you iron it, it creases again as soon as it is worn, so what to do? Iron it every time you wear it?

I iron my linen clothes like this: first iron using the steam setting, then spray starch and iron again. It stops nostalgic of the immediate creasing, especially on trousers. I’d only wear a linen top once anyway as the weather is often hot.

What is ironing?

Usual sarky comment when this subject comes up. There are those people who like ironed clothes and bedding and those who don't. No right or wrong here.
I like clothes and bedding to be ironed, unfortunately now I am not able to do it all myself. I have a lady who helps in the house and now does some ironing as well. My treat to myself.

I hate ironing but love clothing and linen that has been pressed.
Every tea towel sheet etc is ironed as are all our clothes bar the odd fleece type top.
My airing cupboard is a joy, it also smells lovely.

I wish I could say that my airing cupboard is a joy. Things seem to move about of their own accord. I keep promising myself that I’ll have a good turnout - maybe I should take the advice on another thread to have a project for the days between Christmas and the New Year and that can be mine!

I don't mind ironing but do very little. I have a table top board which I find invaluable as I no longer have to drag an ironing board out.

J52 Wed 21-Oct-26 13:26:23

Nostalgic! I don’t know where this word came from in my post 😂

Jaxjacky Wed 21-Oct-26 13:26:52

MrJ does the ironing, he’s always done it, the majority by far is his shirts, an occasional linen or cotton top of mine in the summer.
I used to iron before we met, school uniform, work clothes, but never bedding, underwear or tea towels.

pably15 Wed 21-Oct-26 13:27:31

I don't iron much now duvet covers mainly,,,everything else goes over the radiators...or if they're creased a lot, I'll give them a run over

My mother ironed all bedding and clothes for a family of six and was said to have ironed nappies for three babies (twins then another a year later)
When the ghastly nylon sheets and shirts arrived in 1950s she embraced them. Does anyone remember the torture of sleeping in brushed nylon sheets?

Rocketstop2 Thu 22-Oct-26 13:10:17

I still iron but a lot of people I know do not and are shocked when I say I do.
I like to iron bedding too which others think is crazy !
Actually I don't like ironing but still do it, but I think ironers may be a declining species !

silverlining48 Thu 22-Oct-26 13:17:34

I don’t remember the last time I got the iron and board out.
I wear cotton and linen too but never leave wet washing in the machine and give everything a good shake before hanging out in the garden and finish off by using my hand to smooth things out. It does the trick for me.

silverlining48 Thu 22-Oct-26 13:21:58

Water meadow, oh yes I remember, ghastly things that made you sweat.
My dh aunt always out them on our beds when we visited with the children, and that was in the 80 s. Brentford nylon was the most well known shop to get them from.
I understand her reasons, but we didn’t get a comfortable night.

Jenthehen Thu 22-Oct-26 13:48:42

I am in your club, always liked ironing probably because I feel warm and relaxed. It's my quiet time and like you I listen to music.

moggiek Thu 22-Oct-26 13:52:21

I love ironing!! It’s never been a chore for me 😊

poppysmum Thu 22-Oct-26 13:57:26

used to help mum out at home those were the days that dad even as a lorry driver wore shirt and tie.
then when i had partners i used to iron their shirts or t shirts but now i am alone. most of my leggings sweat tops and summer maxis do not need a press, when i moved i sort of lost my ironing board and iron ha ha

Onetoein Thu 22-Oct-26 13:58:00

Hi. Nanna8 you made me laugh so much! My mum had a ironing board that had a seat attached! Never seen one since that was in the later 1950's. Quite heavy to unfold but comfy to do the ironing for a family of six. I still have an ironing board, but now a mini iron. My daughters both in their 40s with family, just dont iron. When one of there hubbies needs a shirt for a meeting it's iron it yourself. He uses his own iron and sheet on the table. This is the daughter, that will not iron, cook or clean! A condition she put before marrying. She can cook, passed exams in it made beautiful cake. But she works full time and pays a cleaner. Notice I said 'she' pays a cleaner. Power to her!

Cazza1953 Thu 22-Oct-26 14:00:28

I always used to iron, then six years ago, my daughter said ‘why are you ironing, I never do’. I hated it, so I stopped then and haven’t ironed again. By the time I have had my clothes on for a few minutes, any creases have dropped out. Best thing I’ve done!

Estrellita Thu 22-Oct-26 14:01:16

How do you manage?

knspol Thu 22-Oct-26 14:22:52

I'm an ironer! Did stop ironing sheets several years ago except for visitors but do iron and spray starch pillowcases. I have ironing board etc set up in spare room so might iron every few days rather that waiting for pile. Find that doing it like that it's no bother and do like clothes to be ironed.
