Spiders! 🕷 🕷

Yes, Primrose 53. Conkers! My Mum swore by them although she was quite happy to handle them - even the enormous strawberry spiders. I don’t see as many as I used to maybe be I now have wooden floors instead of carpets ?

I show my young granddaughter that she doesn’t need to be afraid of spiders - ‘incy wincy’rhyme and stories. She watches as I pick them up and put them outside. Her mother on the other hand is hysterical when she sees one! Not a good role model.

I don't mind them and leave them be in our house (no, I'm not houseproud about cobwebs!).
The only exception was the big one who used to live up in the corner of the bedroom ceiling but woke me up one night running across my bare shoulder - I'm afraid s/he was evicted for abusing my tolerance!

Beloved is terrified of them, I just dislike them. I use the card and glass trick.

I tend to enrole them in flying lessons with Air Flingus

We have a conservatory at the back of our house and …….. spiders in every corner and the ceiling struts. Big ones, medium and baby ones. I don’t much care for any of them but they snag the nasties and take them to their lairs but have taken exception to the big one - he caught a bumble bee in his web - and unfortunately that was the last we saw of the bumble bee. I think the bumble bee put up a fight though - we haven’t seen the spider since.

#kittylester I have a similar story from when I was 16. My mother and siblings had gone on holiday to visit my aunt and I stayed at home with my dad. I went to the loo and on the way out the door a spider dropped down from the middle of the empty doorway and blocked my path. Back then there were no mobiles, obviously. I sat on the side of the bath until my dad came home from work to rescue me. Needless to say he thought it was hilarious. I wouldn't harm them in fact I can't touch them at all. I just leave the room until they disappear. If they want to live in my bedroom I just sleep elsewhere. I'm really terrified of them although I know they won't hurt me - probably!

So it’s not just me- they are getting bigger! 😱😱😱😱😱

Try to be positive and call them environmentally friendly fly catchers

Found this by my bed the other night….. sorry I hoovered it up as I wasn’t in the mood to do battle with it.

How brave you all are!!! They terrify me and last week I saw an absolute giant around 4-5 inches in size and sitting on one of my blinds, never seen anything that size before. Managed to hoover it up but then there was the problem of emptying the cleaner to get rid of the damn thing. Eventually did that outside and hit it with a shovel. Since then have seen 2 others that would normally have freaked me out but they were only around 2'' in size so got rid of those too in the same way. Looks like being a bad year for spiders.

I have a spider who has taken up residence in my pantry. I haven't the heart to get rid of it. Very well behaved. Wasn't there one morning when I opened the door and I felt quite sad, looked again later and was back - felt so relieved.

My Nan always said ‘if you wish to live & thrive let a spider run alive’! So try to evict even the horrid huge ones that run at me rather than away. Got couple of catchers that work ok but best deterrent is my little cat, Poppy, who thinks spiders are her toys & plays with them till poor things have a heart attack! Try to get to them first but both are much faster than me. Only reason I like the chillier weather is few less of the horrid huge ones!

I like having a spider in the house, I have a large one that appears at about 9pm and takes the same route across the room every evening.

They're amazing creatures and I have a few places in my house where they are left to their own divices and only get disturbed when we decorate. Love watching them.

Fresh conkers do work, but unfortuately here the spiders move in about a month and a half before the conkers fall off the trees!

I’m afraid my cat likes to kill spiders if she can get them. Strangely she “talks” to them before she kills them, so I have time to try and rescue them. This morning I woke up to two very large very dead spiders in my bed with me

Cellar spiders - so that’s what they’re called! Yes, we’ve loads of them this year (mostly in the cellar, funnily enough), and the cobwebs to match. I hate hurting them, but they’re so difficult to see and my sight’s not the best - unfortunately the webs have to be got rid of so I just hope that they’re out of the way when the hoover attachment approaches.

The worst spider I ever saw in the cellar was a massive jet black one with thick legs that appeared when I moved a cabinet down there - I swear it was staring me out, and not in a benevolent way either. I just pushed the cabinet back and scarpered before it came after me.

I don’t mind spiders at all unless they’re in my bedroom and might run over my face in the night. I would never dream of killing them.

This makes me think of Princess Charlotte telling David Attenborough that she likes spiders and did he like them, too? Of course he said yes, and had a theory about why some people didn’t like them. I wonder if anyone here is clever enough to find and post the clip.

Yes, bikergran I have cellar spiders (often confused with harvestmen) but rarely house spiders. The former hunt the latter so that may be why. I don't mind them mooching around as they are slow and delicate but their prolific web spinning tends to reveal my lack of enthusiam for dusting. I quite like to think of them trundling around at night like robotic vacuum cleaners ridding the house of mahoosive beasties.

My daughter has a skylight that often has wasps flying around it trying to escape. I can’t reach that far to try to move them but the following day the resident spider drops down the remains of itself wasp supper and I shout thank you to it.

It’s about now that spiders enter their mating season, hence we see them more.
I’ll just pick them up in my hand and put them out, MrJ does not share my nonchalance.
