Candles, do you like it dislike them

travelnan I see candles for sale in most charity shops. ?

I buy St Eval candles but love it when I get bought Jo Malone or Scandinovisk for birthdays or Christmas ?

rafichagran I am surprised that you can buy candles from a charity shop. My daughter is the manager of a charity shop and says they are not allowed to sell them as it is illegal.

Not for me. Candles are only used in this house in a power cut situation. Candles are very dangerous if you keep birds in the home as the fumes are poisonous and will kill.

I’m in the “Love ‘em” camp.
Today I have had lunch at home with a friend and I am burning a candle called “Frosted Spruce” from John Lewis. It wasn’t terribly expensive (not like some) and have many hours of burning time. There is gel in the jar around the candle with sprigs of spruce in so it’s pretty to look at too.

I am not at work this week, and I have a unscented tea light in the vase light base if my glass teapot I have made a lovely cup of loose leaf tea, and am drinking it in my bone china 1930's style cup and saucer, lovely on a overcast dull day like this. The candle gives a lovely glow.
I am really enjoying this, however next week at work it will be no candle, and a teabag dunked in a stoneware mug.
I am neither posh or pretentious, I am just enjoying the feeling of a pleasant afternoon tea.

I love a candle.
My favourite are Diptyque and Rathbones.

Carcinogenic? As with everything else some say yes, some say the fumes given off are harmless. The cheap ones are, apparently the worst.
I’m of the opinion that I don’t want to sit and inhale anything that may harm me.
Now they seem to be bringing up the dangers of wood burning stoves again. Thank goodness I don’t have one of those.

Only when we are or have been cooking fish and the smell has lingered in the air. Then I use any nightlight type candle and if I’ve run out of the lemon ones then just add a few drops of lemon juice near the flame.
I bought some pink ones at Christmas but found the smell sickly when I opened the packet so I haven’t tried them yet. They’ll have to be there for power cuts in an emergency instead.

I only use unscented candles after finding sooty deposits on the side of windows from the yankee candles I used to buy.I have amelt burner but my OH 's allergies kick in when its on .I did get a present of Harry Slatkin candles,Kitchen Herbs scent and it was the nicest most natural scent I've ever had.I cant find it anywhere online though ,I'll keep looking

I love scented candles and will have them in the living room and the bathroom. I prefer citrussy smells but also cinnamon in winter. I like Yankee fresh linen too. And woodwick candles.

I like the Aldi Jo Malone copies.

Not keen on overwhelming smells like vanilla. Some of the cheap candles are so sickly.

I heard a story a while ago from a friend who had a rental property. The tenants had complained about black greasy marks along the edge of the ceiling and the wall. They had tried to get them off but to no avail. Anyway, long story short, they had been burning loads of Yankee candles and it was the residue from those. I don't know how she got the marks off in the end but I know it was difficult.

In light of this story, I do wonder what we are inhaling when we light all of these candles.

I do like candles but only light them for a few hours a night and only at the weekend.

Jo Malone are lovely.

I have candles from The White Company and Jo Malone they are quite expensive but they last well.

I'm with you there tanith. I have plain candles and nightlights for power cuts and Christmas, but can't stand the scented kind.

Yes some can, I am not keen on the sweet one's but I do like the patchouli.
I also get candles for Christmas from a local candle maker who hand pours and uses the best ingredients, not chemical at all, they are not full of chemicals and smell beautiful. They are expensive, hence they are Christmss and birthday presents from my son and daughter.

I am in the lucky position of having a Mother that everyone buys candles for but she doesn't like them, so passes them on to me! So my candles are free She has given me a lot of yankee candles and a porcelain base/lamp top for them. They all seem nice but some are too sweet for me. I think one was waffles or something, smelt like I had been baking all day and overdosed on sugar. I bought some nice patchouli and sandalwood candles from sainsburys recently too, which were nice

I like Yankee, but Aldi own brand are really good.
