Domestos top causes havoc

Anybody else having a run of domestic disasters? Cleaning the bathroom today and the top of the domestos flipped off and landed in the plug hole. It is now stuck and will require a plumber.....aaarrrggghhhh!

Sounds like a freak occurrence - what a pain - and probably an expensive pain!!

I agree, it does sound like a plumber's job. An expensive clean.

I applied deodorant after my shower last night. I had to flick a switch at the rear of the canister and it got stuck in the "on" position. I had to place it in the sink, hole nearest the plughole, close and leave the bathroom until the spray had dissipated/evaporated. Naturally it was a large, new can.

I can't get the top off Domestos bottles!

On the subject of deodorant/antiperspirant , I have given up on spray ones, and now stick to Mitchum roll on.

(Does remind me of that old joke, a chap goes into the chemists and asks for a deodorant, the chemist asks "ball type or aerosol?" The chap replies, neither, I want it for under me arms!")

I'll get me coat..................

I'm intrigued as to why it needs a plumber. Doesn't the plug hole have drainage holes to prevent objects going down the pipe? Is the Domestos lid just sort of wedged? confused

Our boiler went on the blink this morning......Someone will come out to have a look at it on Monday!!! Don't need heating but neither will we have hot water. Grrrr .

That's a good 'un, phoenix! grin
I can very rarely open bleach bottles these days and find that my left hand won't work the spray button on an aerosol can (just noticed the 'sort of' anagram there blush)! and it's just not possible to spray under one's left armpit with one's left hand confused. I therefore buy roll-on ones now.

Bleach tops are a nightmare. I had surgery on my right hand which isn't as strong as it used to be; and as I'm right-handed, the left hand isn't very strong either.

Domestos tops are a real pain to twist off. There must be an easier way to make them child proof although I suspect if I asked, my GC would open them for me. It's like my eye drops plastic bottle. Opening a new one can be a real struggle as they have plastic round them which has to be picked off because the red arrows suggesting that's what you pull to get it off of course doesn't work angry

Oh how right you are - my life at the moment is a constant round of domestic disasters I contemplated running away today but couldn`t think of anywhere to go - it sounds good in theory but impractical!!!!

rosesarered Sat 26-Apr-14 20:13:53

You could start a domestic disaster blog sparkygran and we could all try and top each others stories [see what I did there? TOP.... geddit?]
So expensive to get a plumber out for a job like that [and you would feel so silly!] Try getting a child of five in first though, they have nifty little fingers.

Had removed the plug to give a thorough clean and top is now securely wedged and having have numerous people attempting to dislodge is now leaking so outlet pipe is wrapped in towels until Monday.

You know something if I tried to do this as an experiment I couldn`t do it so why oh why can something so stupid cause such misery and havoc?

Ana Sat 26-Apr-14 20:42:00

Oh dear...sad
I don't think our plugs are removable - seem to be part and parcel of the bath/basin unit.

I would undo the u bend, put a bucket underneath and smash it with a screwdriver and hammer.
I hope you see where I'm going with this. The idea of undoing the u bend is to catch the bits so they don't go any further down the pipe.

Which way up is the lid sparky? If the opening is upwards I would try to insert pliers and force open whilst lifting. A bit of Blu-tac might improve the grip. I successfully used this technique this afternoon when removing a tube within another tube when mending GS's goal post.

Elegran Sat 26-Apr-14 21:26:10

Could you screw a big screw down through the cap and pull it up with that?

POGS Sat 26-Apr-14 21:40:05

Get something metal, like a scewer.

Heat the end until it is red hot, maybe over a gas cooker ring.

Push into the domestic top and make a hole.

Insert something with a hook, maybe a bent coat hanger.

Pull like bug--y.

Good luck. smile

POGS Sat 26-Apr-14 21:43:29

Typo

Domestos top not 'domestic'.

jollyg Sun 27-Apr-14 08:51:42

I second POGS, but perhaps you don't have gas, so with a kitchen knife with sharp end turn it round to make a hole, this might take some time as these tops are sturdy, then hook it out

bikergran Sun 27-Apr-14 09:05:18

POGS we think alike..lol

JulieGransnet (GNHQ) Sun 27-Apr-14 09:17:04

I managed to get a coin stuck in the hoover. I used a chopstick and attached a hook to the end using a very sticky plaster then used that to hook it out. Can you melt a hole in it, as the POGS says, then put a hook through the hole and pick it out? A coat hanger may work if you don't have a hook (think of the ones you use to put net curtains up at the window).

Good luck! smile

If your DH (or a friendly neighbour) is a handyman, he may have some of those fixers for hollow plasterboard walls - after they go through the wall, prongs open up on the other side which face backward and when it is tightened up hold stuff firmly to the wall. If you put one of those through, you can grip it to pull upwards.

Aurelia Sun 27-Apr-14 09:27:42

Give a good spray of WD40 around it and leave for an hour, for lubrication.

tiggypiro Sun 27-Apr-14 09:32:30

Where do you live Sparky ? Can't we all just pop round and see whose brilliant idea works best ? I have no other idea to add but I am the proud owner of an electric drill and I also have one of those 'fixers' Elegran mentions I could bring. I also have a set of screw drivers and lots of other thingymejigs which I am not too sure what they are for but are bound to be useful for your job.
