Toothache

I had a similar problem albeit many years ago. After having a filling on a back tooth I had constant toothache and was so miserable that, after several days, my work packed me off back to the dentist. He removed the nerve in that tooth which I guess was what is now called a root canal filling, then refilled which did the trick, although eventually I ended up having a crown but that lasted 50 years.

Full blown toothache is agony. I really feel for you.
Could your dentist not remove the tooth and fit an implant? That shouldn't cause issues with the teeth either side, would it?

Oragel is used to deaden pain in the skin or mucous membranes but is only a short term solution but will give relief quickly. It's benzocaine.

The toothpaste needs to "build up".

Thanks for all comments. I think the ibuprofen was mainly for helping to sleep at night and occasionally if necessary during the day. I had two when I got up and after about 40 mins, tooth is sooo much quieter. I'll definitely try the Oragel. Last night I had a rum with hot water and blackcurrant and I think that relaxed me which helped. Used the toothpaste round the tooth about 2.00 am and am now putting pillow slips in the wash. Worth it though. Any other suggestions still appreciated. Toothache just seems to put a stop to everything.

Has the dentist prescribed stomach protection, like Omeprazole, advised if you're taking Ibuprofen? Also ibuprofen isn't recommended for more than short term use in the over 65s. Just be aware of the contraindications.

Have you tried Orajel? I always have some in the cupboard, not had to use it myself but my sons girlfriend did and she said it worked for her tooth pain until she was able to see her dentist. It numbs the area around the tooth.
I buy it in Tesco.

The best toothpaste for sensitivity in my experience is the Sensodyne version with novamin in.
There were about 3 in the range.
Quite expensive.
You will probably need to read the ingredients. It used to have a "flash" on the front.

So sorry for you. My go to solution is firstly toothpaste with the anaesthetic ingredient like Sensodyn or Colgate sensitive. Then a small brandy swirled around the tooth area. Vivaldi has a good suggestion.

I’d be concerned about a dentist that advised taking ibuprofen for a few weeks particularly if she not aware of any medical conditions you might have.

I'm just wondering if your GP would prescribe something for neuropathic pain in the circumstances, maybe if your dentist emailed him what she's told you.
May not be something they'd do, but worth a try as it sounds like you're really suffering.
