UTI and bloody urine

I had that with a very sudden bout of cystitis. I was going so frequently that when I rang the doctor he delivered the antibiotics in person and took away a sample for testing. The next day he phoned to say it was a descending infection from the kidney not an ascending one - the usual culprit - and he prescribed a different antibiotic, telling me to bin the original ones. I had time off work and had lower back pain - in the kidney area. I went back to work when I felt better but I suffered a recurrence within hours as I couldn't drink enough during working hours to keep flushing the infection through as I worked in a lab where we couldn't eat or drink except during breaks, so I had to take more time off.
Looking back I realise you don't get that sort of attention from a local GP these days. It was in the mid 80s and appointments were easy to arrange at short notice! If that happened now I don't know how I'd cope as I live alone and I couldn't have made it to the health centre even if an appointment was available!

Don’t want to be alarmist but for me it was a lot more serious really. Blood in my urine turned out to be bladder cancer. So please don’t hang about if you ever have any symptoms like this. Get straight to the drs. Get it checked out!!

Unfortunately majority of UTI’s are caused by E.coli - our lower regions in females are badly designed. I had one UTI after another which meant one antibiotic after another - I became immune to most of them . I eventually read about a trial E.coli vaccination and signed up - never looked back - changed my life. That was a year ago - no idea how long it will last but sincerely hope it gets rolled out before too long. Will save NHS a fortune. Also take D-Mannose.

I have a history of recurrent utis .....I am prescribed hiprex ( an antiseptic medication which make the urine acidic and stops and kills any bacteria ) and also blissel gel ( a vaginal hormone gel) .....and any time i DO get a uti, I am prescribed a minimum of 7 days antibiotics and sometimes 10 days . D MANNOSE is fine for ecoli infections but mine are usually enterococcus or klebisella

My few UTIs have been more blood than urine (drama queen, that’s me) but my mother had lots in her late 80’s and I found DMannose did the trick. The GP have our chemist the go-ahead to include it in her blister pack of meds (although I paid for it privately). A friend swore by cranberry extract. It helped her.

Yes had a number of uti infections with blood. But gp can test your urine to check it is an infection.

Trimethoprine does not always work. For E. coli try amoxicillin

My DiL has had kidney problems in the past, particularly when pregnant, and has been given a supply of paper sticks to pee on. At the first sign of a problem she goes to the hospital's renal unit and they prescribe antibiotics. She's been hospitalised so many times and always advises people to go straight to a doctor if it happens.
I got very run-down during a protracted house move, staying in various houses for a few months until completion. I had three UTIs during that time and found that antibiotics were the only thing that really worked, such a relief as they work so fast.

I had this. It was a bleeding kidney.

A few years ago I lost blood in my urine. Antibiotics cleared it but I was sent for tests. Nothing found so doctor concluded it was caused by lack of oestrogen. I was prescribed hrt pessaries which I used for a while. The next time I had a urine infection the same thing happened. I took the HRT pessaries again. Now I am absolutely scrupulous after using the loo and use wipes. Also change underwear twice daily.

Never delay getting treatment for a UTI .
If the infection ascends into your kidneys a great deal of damage can occur

And not only kidney damage, but in older people it can send you quite doolally.

Lots of water and I purchase D-Mannose to put into it. I’m always getting infections and I find D-Mannose gets rid of it. Your infections sound really bad so I would go to a doctor as well. The NHS recommend D-Mannose.

I went to bed 3 years ago with symptoms I thought were my kidney stones …severe pain, shivering etc. usually this lasted a day or so then the stone(s) passed. Took co-codamol as it was really bad… cut a long story short as I live alone I became unconscious for 3 days/nights …only alive now thanks to a friend who came to visit and a neighbour who missed me… I had a UTI and sepsis … was hospitalised for c 4 werks but lucky to have made it! I have Chronic kidney disease but🤞🤞🤞 this is now poor but stable…so far!

If there is blood in the urine you should always report to the GP. I had it just the once, he did a test said no infection. A month later it happened again. My GP said he would send a sample off for testing, it came back inconclusive and they asked for another sample. A week later I was seeing an oncologist for bladder cancer. So glad I went to the GP and that he was on the ball. It was caught early enough for chemo and a urostomy and I've never looked back.

See your GP double quick and be truthful, insist on an appointment and have a urine test.

Quick update.
Bleeding has stopped and feel 80%better thank goodness..due to the trimethoprim, shan't hesitate to use it again if needed

This is more worrying than the blood or the infection do not leave a water infection ! I spent a lifetime with them, it all ceased when I stopped having sex. (thats not fair is it)

Yes OP. I have this with every UTI and I've had several over the past few years. It can be very alarming but it quickly stops with antibiotics. Mine is just a symptom of the infection.

Had this a couple of days ago. Terrible pain but only drops of urine. So used a special jug I keep in the bathroom to try to wee in. Small amounts of brown, orangey urine which I poured into a specimen tube. Rang the surgery and got an appointment to take around there. They send the sample away for analysis to see if you are on the correct antibiotic. Meanwhile they prescribe antibiotics. Bought the specimen tubes from Amazon so have some handy. Hope you feel better now and advise you get urine checked if there are any signs again. Only thing is that the dip stick they use isn’t 100% but the analysis is.

I agree. The infection could move to your kidneys.
