I started taking iodine tablets many years ago thinking they would cause an increase in thyroxine production and I might lose some weight. Soon after that my neck felt slightly swollen which may have been my thyroid gland. I then developed an underactive thyroid for which I've been taking thyroxine tablets for the last 30 years. Whether this was a coincidence I'll never know, but I'd never suggest taking iodine tablets. My grandmother had an underactive thyroid I believe, she died in 1955.
