Flaming Chilblains!

Ouch, Bloss! Those look painful! Sorry, no advice. I got a chilblain on one big toe a few years ago, GP prescribed an antibiotic which did bugger all of course. I was a little bit annoyed about that but I guessed he hadn't much experience of chilblains, and neither had I!

Anyway, an electric underblanket on my bed sorted the problem out. For some reason my feet, usually too hot in the evenings, go into super chill mode when I go to bed.

I hope you find something that helps. Mitts in bed?

Oh that looks so sore. There are some silver gloves that are supposed to help, the Raynauds Society sell them. ( I realise you don’t have Raynauds but they may help).

Thanks Baggs, I’ve been wearing gloves in bed for the last few days and it seems to be helping. I’m being super careful to avoid any infection too.

I don’t know what is triggering them. I can predict frosty mornings as soon as my hands start to tingle but we haven’t had much frost this year.

Blossoming have you ever been tested for gout? My mother in law had it and gout on her joints caused hard swellings but her fingers looked like yours. Gout is nothing to do with drinks to much port 🤣. But a form of arthritis.

I was diagnosed with gout in 2921 Whiff and am on medication. My uric acid level is now normal.

Apparently, I used to get chilblains on my fingers really badly when I was a baby which of course I don't remember and later on, on my toes.

Dear old mum always said that if you wee on them (not on broken skin, obviously) it would cure them. Sounds thoroughly disgusting, doesn't it? Old wives' tale? I never asked if you were meant to rinse it off or not but one year, I thought I'd give it a try - and it worked! I haven't suffered since. If you're really that desperate ...

My Father said and did the same lovebeigecardigans with the same results.
He also had Reynauds.

You could try fresh Ginger on them. But before the skin breaks.
Buy it already pulped in a tube, in any supermarket.

I had another thought, I used to soak my hands in warm paraffin wax. It was so comforting! Well worth a try when they have healed a bit.

When I was young and lived at home, we used to have hot water bottles in the bed to put our feet on. I used to get awful chilblains that itched like mad.
I can remember my dad giving me ' Snowfire' I think it was called to rub on them. Not sure if they sell it these days though.

I bought some "Snowfire" a few years ago. My mum used to recommend it for chapped hands. I might even still have it....

PS It was really effective too. I have taken much more care about avoiding chapping over the last few years (two pairs of gloves, including waterproof ones, when gardening in winter, for example) so haven't needed to use it for ages.

Right, Snowfire being delivered tomorrow, silver gloves will hopefully be here soon. In the meantime I’m using E45 eczema cream under white cotton gloves and they’re starting to look a bit better.

Update. The Snowfire arrived this morning, closely followed by the Raynauds silver gloves. So far they both seem to be helping, thanks once again for your advice.

I was worried as a few years ago I contracted Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a seriously nasty skin condition caused by a reaction to an antibiotic. It started with the skin on my fingers looking like they’d been plunged in an acid bath. I was warned it can recur but fortunately this wasn’t it!

That looks so painful. Think you will be on the right track with the "Snowfire". I haven't heard or thought about snowfire since over 60 years. My late uncle worked with the roads department in wilds of Scotland clearing roads from snow and landfalls and of course men didn't wear gloves back then! I remember him getting out the tin of Snowfire every night before he retired for the night (always went to bed before us as he was up so early every day). Thanks for the memories.
