Labyrinthitis - anyone else had it recently?

Not me but my friend has had it. She couldn't get out of bed either and threw up when she did. Her Doctor also thought it was vertigo but after no improvement eventually got diagnosed with L. She was off work about four weeks maybe longer. I suffer from Vertigo as did my Dad. The Dr. prescribed me Buccal tablets which you dissolve between your top lip and gum as soon as you feel an attack coming on. They work perfectly and I've never needed to get a repeat prescription as the quantity supplied will keep me going for years to come.

HelloRazzamatazz I have not had Labyrinthitis recently but did have it some years ago and fully understand the symptoms you are describing especially the dental hygienist appointment and not being able to lie down in the chair. Yes it is unpleasant but it will get better just give yourself some time and take things at a slower pace until you feel more comfortable. I can't remember what medication I was on but it did take a little time to recover. Be kind to yourself and get well soon.

Yes I’ve had it a couple of times but admittedly not recently. Very unpleasant experience. Travel sickness pills helped. I hope you recover soon. Try not to move your eyes too quickly.

DH had it years ago and didn't realise how bad it was until he got out of bed and fell over. It's horrid isn't it?

Yes, it happened to me and went on for months. I had to take Stemetil to function at all and spent much of my time resting. I saw a consultant in the end. There are exercises you can do which are supposed to help but it took a while for them to work for me. I think it is just that I am prone to vertigo generally so my recovery was longer than most.

I don't think I have had labrynthitis but I have had vertigo, in July; saw the Doctor who prescribed pills and it almost stopped, until this morning, when it struck with a vengeance as I sat up in bed. I was fortunate in getting an appointment to see the doctor this afternoon (!) for which many thanks; he prescribed different tablets, and tested for the 'something' manoeuvre, but apparently it wasn't necessary and doesn't think I have recurring vertigo or labrynthitis, just something that occurs occasionally. My blood pressure is higher than it should be. It is horrible, isn't it. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh, poor you! I know how awful it can be. I was prescribed Buccastem M Buccal tablets, which you can now buy over the counter. You need to check the contraindications! I hope that you soon feel better whatever you decide to try.

Dizziness and sudden loss of balance can be symptoms of quite a few illness's, as I discovered last year. I had my first attack at the swimming pool of all places, had to be lifeguarded out and promptly threw up on the side of the pool. Ambulance called by the pool manager as I couldn't stand up, and taken to hospital. Kept there for a week and had brain scan in case it was a mini stroke, saw ear specialist, blood tests, heart tests and 24 hr bp monitoring. They declared at the end of the week that they didn't know what had caused it and just sent me home with BP tablets! Same thing happened again a few weeks later but this time I saw a consultant who said she thought it might be a problem with my neck and sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that my neck vertebrae were collapsing [ common in old age ] and were trapping the main vessel that takes oxygen to the brain. I was then sent to a chiropractor for neck strengthening and stretching exercises. This has helped enormously and although I do have the odd slight dizzy spell still, I haven't had any major ones again. I know how this condition saps your confidence to go out and do your normal things so I hope that no stone is left unturned by your doctors and you get the right diagnosis. Wishing you all the best.

I had a serious bout of vertigo a few months ago- it was very frightening. It turned out to be BPPV ( not labyrinthitis). I talked with 111, & then my Dr, & then did lots of googling. I hadn’t had a virus so BPPV was concluded to be the cause. I got back to normal after a few days of doing the Eplay manoeuvre. Very unpleasant to do but it worked for me.

I got it the day after my birthday and what a fright it gave me . I got up. Opulent walk felt sick and dizzy was really frightened did see the doctor wrong diagnosis as ear infection. Happened again it was vertigo and it was awful. Hope I never have it again was so scary.

I've had it twice and it's a horrible thing to have. The first time, I was in my teens and had it so bad that I couldn't sit my final Higher exam, Maths, as I couldn't even get out of bed. Fortunately, the school was able to put in a medical appeal and I was awarded a pass. The second time was just a few years ago and although it wasn't nearly as bad, it was still horrible. The nausea was horrendous.

Well, thank you all for your input, it doesn't look good does it. I don't feel nauseous at all, and can turn my head without feeling uncomfortable. Luckily my elderly dog has arthritis and is mostly in his buggy, so I can hang onto that when I walk him.

I think my immune system must be down through stress and will just have to sit this one out. I moved here last March, lost the roof off the kitchen/lounge here six months later in the November, couldn't be fixed until February. I then found out all the floors here were rotten and had to pack and have removals collect it all to store everything so they could be replaced in August. I hadn't even realised I would have to varnish the floors myself, I thought when the men left I could get my furniture back. Very sadly my 17 year old cat died just as I finished the floors, but at least we'd all crammed into one room here, she wasn't at kennels. It's been a bad year, I will start practising some serious self care, I've never been unwell like this before. Flu/booster tomorrow!

You have my sympathy, I have had it a number of times. I keep a stash of prescription anti nausea tablets for any episodes. and take prescription antihistamines as soon as it rears its ugly head!
It was so bad on one occasion, my mother found me lying on the floor, unable to get up.

The doctor didn't prescribe anything Marydoll, I only have the original Stugeron from the telephone consultation. Looks like I've got to get through this on my own.

When I actually saw the doctor she said I should have only taken them for five days, probably explains the horrible headache I had that week. It's made me nervous to plan anything. When I left the dentists I was scared to cross the road, as I felt 'well' when I went I hadn't taken the umbrella.

The first time it happened, it started witha severe migraine, I thought I was dying!

Is it possible to speak to a more sympathetic GP? Not easy I know.
