I had exactly the same problem - it didn't go away on its own so I booked into a good physiotherapist. She diagnosed a torn meniscus and some arthritis. She organised an x-ray for me, to use as a reference base for future problems. X-ray showed mild arthritis. She gave me 3 basic exercises to do, 3 times a day, every day. I thought they were quite minimal but it seems minimal and frequent do the trick! It has taken a few months but now I am pretty much back to normal. If I have any pain I have learned to have a few days resting here and there, around normal activity. I still do my physio exercises twice a week. I love to walk and now I can enjoy this again.
