Really swollen feet and ankles

Has anyone tried one of those Revitive machines that you see advertised? I'm tempted to give one a try, but it's quite expensive.

Frusemide is your friend. If you can loads of water and regular breaks. Rest legs up when you can. You will see marginal difference. Don’t worry cold weather will sort it. Have a lovely holiday.

If you still suffer from the same when you get home, I would strongly recommend compression tights rather than socks . I found that socks have a band to keep them up which stops proper circulation whereas tights might be a bugger to put on and not exactly your holiday type wear but they really do help. As I am on my feet a lot, I cannot manage a day without them. BUT, they are quite expensive!

Same here - amlodipine made my feet and ankles swell up so the GP changed it to felodipine. Perfect.

If you can manage it lay on the bed with your bottom on the pillow and your legs up the wall - that reduces swelling after a fairly short time. Makes your ankles feel better too.
I am another one who gets swollen ankles with amlodopine and a cough with Rimenidine!

Hi maddy my DH suddenly started having hugely swollen feet and ankles when we were on holiday. He too has high blood pressure. This has worked for him.
Drink water to flush out salt
Keep your feet up as much as possible
AND most important of all buy compression socks. These are not flight socks like you get for planes but proper compression socks that compress from your feet up your legs. They come in various strengths. Ask the chemist. They have worked wonders for my DH. He now wears them every day and no more swollen feet or ankles. See your GP when you get home but it could be that the veins in your legs are not good at pumping the blood back to your heart and need a little help from the socks. Enjoy your hols.

Over the years this question has popped up on GN and my post is obviously always the same.

I was changed from AMLOPODINE because of ankle swelling to INDAPAMIDE and it did the trick.

Obviously heat, sitting for long periods can cause swelling but my doctor knew straight away to change my BP medication as it is known a common side effect of Amlopodine is swollen ankles. .

I have the same problem in the heat with Amlodopine,it is one of the side effects.

Are you wearing supportive shoes/sandals? My ankles have swollen on holiday when I’ve been walking a lot in flip flops or in sandals without a strap at the back.

Is the car seat pressing against the back of your thighs just above your knees? If it is, it might be reducing the circulation in your legs and causing the swelling. This happened to my mum on a coach trip. She found that putting her feet on something so that her legs didn't touch the front edge of the seat made a big difference.

Thank you Greenfinch. I can better cope with swollen feet and ankles than the hacking cough that Ramopril gave me. We need the medicines but the side effects can be a bloody pain at times.

This happened to me when I was put on Amlodopine. I was told that this was the most common side effect. I am pretty certain that it is that causing your problem.

If you can get compression socks they would help. I used to get that problem on long flights/travel and got the socks initially to reduce risk of clots. Then I found that my feet and ankles didn’t swell, even after a lot of traveling. They feel a bit tight at first but you get used to them. I got mine in Boots but pharmacies in Austria or Germany probably sell them.

Thank you Fennel (and everyone else). I have recently been prescribed Amlodipine for high blood pressure. Tried Ramipril first but it gave me terrible sore throat problems. Thank goodness - I will go back to my doctor when I get home and see if there is another substitute ace inhibitor. Bloody side effects!!!! Feel I can stop worrying now and enjoy the last 2 weeks of my holiday with huge feet!! Thanks Gransnet.

Don't know what advice to give you. It happened to me once when i was on holiday.....the heat I think. Hope you get som useful replies ...

This happens regularly to me when abroad whatever the weather. Sit with them up whenever you can. Have a fab holiday
