Colonoscopy

After reading the thread I am left a bit puzzled...maybe someone can enlighten me please all you cleaver gals...

Just briefly....always had problems with bowels (over 30 yrs put it down to IBS)anyway been getting much worse/more often.

Went docs Wed just gone and Doc discussed sending me for a Colonoscopy asap (I said oh must have been a premeditation as on my way here I saw the BT men threading a cable off one of those big reels ) Doc smiled and said "oh it wont be as big as those) gulp!

Today letter came appointment a week today.
But NO mention of taking liquid/light diet etc etc Just got to turn up with urine sample.!

The doc did give me some Fibrogel she said these may help with my problem.... but she didn't say start taking X amount before appointment or anything... she just sort of give me them if needed etc.

My dd had a colonoscopy many yrs ago she also didn't take liquid before hand but they gave her an enema prior....

The letter doesn't mention anything at all other than at the bottom (pardon the pun)!! tests /x rays may be required and you may therefore have a delay in your appointment.

Perhaps it's different in different cetntres bikergran? I have an appointment next week and they have sent me prep stuff to take a couple of days before which I am not looking forward to. They obviously have to clear out bowel somehow or else the view will be blocked so perhaps you're going down the enema route?

If it were me I think I’d phone and check. That way you will stop worrying and will know what to expect. It’s a sensible question to ask. Hope all goes well bikergran.

Agree with cornergran. I had one a few years ago and another recently and both times I had the magic potion the day before.

I had very little discomfort and no problems and hope you have the same... Good luck!

I had a procedure assessment over the phone and then they sent the prep through the post. Diet commenced two days before with no fibre or milk and only lean meat and no vegetables. Day before six senna and then picolax. No prep means an enema in the department.
I had to have a kidney function test before the prep because it is not suitable if you have any problems.

Phone and check tomorrow biker, no point worrying until you understand how it will be. If they say an enema and you really don’t want that ask if there’s a different way. Please don’t worry, staff managing these procedures are usually both kind and thoughtful, preserving dignity.

Phoning is a good idea bikergran because your appt may not actually be for colonoscopy. If it's anything like our area you have to be referred first then consultant decides if investigations necessary. All to do with funding/rationing and GPs are only allowed to refer for limited investigations these days.

Ok went for app...it was just general app to sort out what I was having done etc.(colonoscopy) that was Friday. so now waiting for the booking people to ring with app..Im expecting one pretty soon.

The nurse gave me a brown paper bag "baileys!?? no Movie stuff..mixture ..

Have read the instructions over and over again but bit confused as to "do I take extra water in between the litre of mixture" or " do I have to drink the cocktail first then! drink extra water...(gosh my stomachs churning just thinking about it)

I had mine done yesterday & won't pretend it was a pleasant experience, but I opted for gas & air, and in retrospect should have accepted IV pain relief which was offered. The prep stuff I took was Moviprep I think. The night before had to mix 2 sachets together in 1 litre of water and drink over 1-2 hrs with extra clear fluids (500ml) between. That's to stop dehydration I think. (Don't stray far from loo!) 2 hours later had to do same again with 2 more sachets in 1 litre plus extra fluid between. Day before procedure had no food after breakfast, just clear fluids. I did get to wear the glam paper shorts, black knee length, so it wasn't all bad .

Please don’t be put off going for colonoscopy. Not everyone suffers pain as some people don’t have bowel conditions that can cause difficulties. My aunt had one and when I went in to collect her you’d have thought she’d had one too many! A bit unsteady and very giggly. She’d had sedation and didn’t remember a thing about it. However, and what was crucial, they found she had cancer and had to have a bowel resection. She has remained cancer free and is so very lucky. Bowel cancers have a really good outcome if caught early. It would be tragic to literally die of embarrassment. I know it’s unpleasant but please have the test if needed, it literally could save your life. That also goes for smear test and breadt screening too. Hoping everyone going for a test finds it as easy as possible.

MesMooTop - I agree with your post. Mine showed nothing amiss although most mornings I still get the violent groin pain which was being investigated 3 years ago.
Like your aunt I was quite high on the gas and air. I also felt so clean and empty that I was sure I could eat sparingly for ever after. That lasted a few hours, of course.

I had a colonoscopy about 20 years ago - it was voluntary, part of a survey.
They sent me some enema stuff that I had to self-administer, then after it worked I got the bus to the hospital. Hoping everything was cleared out!
No anaesthetic, but it wasn't bad, just a bit uncomfortable, as if constipated.
TG good result. I haven't been since.

I don;t mind the gas and air if offered but really don't fancy this sedation drug! I think the "connection with date rape drug has really put me off"

I hate feeling groggy, but then I don't want them to have to stop the procedure and endure it again at a later date,I will see what they offer first.

Has anyone done the "Bowel screening test"! I sent mine off last Tues was told to still do that even though I am having the Colonoscopy.

I don't want to depress anyone but years ago my late husband participated in the trials for the Bowel Screening Test and was given the all clear. Unfortunately, a year later he died from a rare form of bowel cancer that would not have been picked up from the test. So please everyone, do the test and go for your colonoscopies if you are offered one.

The bowel screening test has changed I believe and over 55s are now offered colonoscopy instead of "poo sticks" but the sticks continue for the over 60s. Should think the colonoscopy more reliable and I know at least one person diagnosed as a result.

Yes, I think I may be one of the younger grans (I was an early starter)

Bikergran don't worry about the iv sedation drug, it's fine. I've had it several times for a colonoscopy, endoscopy and other procedures, it only relaxes you for the duration of the procedure and I felt fine afterwards, not at all groggy. I would always ask for it.

I have had 2 and both were painful, my Dr said did i remember it, i said i will never forget it, was only given 2mg of Diazapam he said next time if you have one tell them you need more 2mg isnt enough for some people especially as i take 2mg anyway
